Ann Arbor, Michigan
West Moreland High School junior Mary Sprague stated definitively Saturday afternoon that she still totally likes WMHS senior Craig Granzanino but just "needs some time" away from the two-time all-city 100 yard hurdles champion.
"Craig is like a totally great guy and all but we've been together since like the beginning of second semester and I just need a break," admitted Granzanino while working her weekend job at The Sunglasses Hut.
Sprague, who played the role of Sandy Olsson in West Moreland's production of "Grease" cited "needing some time to herself" and "a little space" as being the driving forces behind her decision which has resulted in five unreturned messages from Granzanino.
"Craig and me, we've had some of the most awesome times - like when he told me he liked me for the first time after he broke the school record in the 100 yard hurdles. And then there was that time in Chemistry when he made a little card with my initials on it and taped it onto the Table of the Elements and told me I was 'anatomical.'"
"I think he meant 'atom-omical' or something. It didn't make much sense but it was cute."
Speaking briefly by telephone, Granzanino stated that "we have not broken up - this is a totally different thing" and said he maintains "total confidence" that he and Sprague will use this as an opportunity to "grow together, not apart."
WMHS shotputter Jeffrey Montague was more opinionated than Granzanino, stating that "Mary is a total bitch - she did this to him the weekend before the prom after that jackass Andy Temple gave her a ride home when her car wouldn't start and Craig had already left."
"He just lets her get away with it because she's a total hottie and their parents play tennis together."
Montague claims that since Granzanino and Sprague started hanging out there has been no less than seven documented cases of Sprague openly ignoring Craig when in the presence of another male and in one case introducing him as her kid brother.
"Which is totally fucking impossible since Craig's like almost a year older than her," clarified Montague.
Spraque maintains that the "break" she requested after the Temple incident was brought on by Craig acting like a "total jerkface" upon hearing Temple had driven her home.
Elaborated Sprague: "And like whatever anyway, Jeffrey Montague has like been after me ever since the eighth grade - one time when we were in Social Studies I like totally saw him looking at my legs. He's such a perv."
Sprague continued: "He just wants to make Craig hate me because he thinks then I'll go out with him [Montague] which is, like, totally hysterical because he [Montague] is, like, way hairy and it's just not going to happen."
For her part, Sprague admits that sometimes she does "feel limited" when with Granzanino.
"Oh my God, Craig is great, you know?" stated Sprague. "He's tall and he's totally funny but like all he talks about is sports - and like our last three dates have been eating microwaved hot dogs on his parents couch while he watches wrestling."
"Sometimes I feel that, as an actress, I might be better off with someone more creatively inclined than Craig - but don't get me wrong, I still totally like him."
Sprague's best friend since like the second grade, Jennifer Lynn Koozer, totally thinks Sprague should dump Granzanino and go out with Brett C. Wilcox, who starred opposite Sprague in "Grease" and received numerous accolades for his original interpretation of Danny Zuko as a mental patient who thinks he is James Dean.
"Brett is, like, so much cooler," maintains Koozer. "He's an actor and a writer - he wrote this one poem for Mary while they were rehearsing that was like so amazing - it like rhymed "kitten" with "smitten." It was so cool."
"He said it was from his character to her character but I'm, like, no way, he totally likes her."
When contacted Wilcox refused to go on the record regarding his feelings for Sprague.
Sprague acknowledged she is feeling pressure. "It's a lonely feeling. I talked to Jennifer Lynn last night for four hours and we didn't resolve anything except that it's okay for me to use my employee discount at The Sunglasses Hut to get her a deal on these shades she saw Sarah Michelle Gellar in."
"Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth all the pain," concluded Sprague. "But I still think Craig is way cool."
