various guitar magazines have been paying quite a lot of attention to my
guitar heroes in in the last year or so. as all these studies or lessons or
examples are offered on the cd that comes with the mag, they're worth to
take a closer look at. I guess I've already mentioned a few of them, but
here's an update.
* the may 1999 issue of guitar techniques (UK) magazine included a
'frank zappa: soloing study' as well as a coverversion of zappa's 'peaches
en regalia'.
* the june 1999 issue of total guitar (UK) included the complete
'eugene's trick bag', = the crossroads guitar duel by steve vai.
* the september 1999 issue of total guitar (UK) presented a 'advanced
rock: g3 blues' study, in which soloing styles of johnson, satriani and vai
were studied.
* the january 2000 issue of guitarist (UK) includes 'steve vai's blues
headlines', an improvisation / solo (on a blues backing) played by steve vai
himself.
* guitar & bass (F) october 1999 includes zappa in their 'riffs des
lecteurs' section: the intro to 'hungry freaks, daddy', as played by olivier
frèche and his companions.
* the november issue of guitar & bass (F) has a zappa technique study
by PJL Robert: solo & playback.
* Guitar Part, december 1999, includes steve vai's 'for the love of
god' on its cd.
but I've also got a couple of cds lying around that I really need to
mention. they've been issued a couple of months ago already, but some
albums just need more attention than others:
* frank zappa: everything is healing nicely
(1999, cd, usa, barking pumpkin umrk 03)
available from most zappa-dealers, this album is a real must! not
just because of the beautiful artwork and packaging (it is very well done)
but also because this cd gives a very fine insight on how "the yellow shark"
came about. absolutely essential. if only for 't'mershi duween'.
* the residents: santa dog 99
(1999, cd, usa, ralphamerica ra06)
it seems to become a tradition: every couple of years or so, our
I-balled buddies celebrate where they came from: "santa dog", the 1972
double 7". a great collection of santa dogs (and other pets) throughout
their career. limited release: a total of 1333 numbered copies.
* the residents: wormwood live 1999
(1999, 2cd, usa, ralphamerica)
the complete show on 2 cds. I'm glad that I had the chance of
seeing them perfom wormwood in amsterdam last year. to fully appreciate
this show, it's not only necessary to know and to comprehend the lyrics, but
you had to see it as well. it was a great show, pure theatre, bombastic,
but funny as well.
limited release: a total of 1200 numbered copies.
* var.art.: frank zappa, the rhythm 'n' blues connection - his covers
uncovered
(cdr)

another home-made product; and by someone who knows how important these
beautiful classics are. - made my day - oh yes, nice artwork and all that
too.
this cdr makes a nice companion / addition to "the originals from the covers
by frank zappa", another one of those nice green-looking discs.
latest bits:
* * * * * zappa samplers alert in japan. just when you think that it might
never end (zappa en la radio, son of cheap thrills, left of the dial,
offended advance cd,...), someone has to prove you right: john sijnke told
me that he had seen a couple of new japanese zappa samplers and he was so
right: six new zappa samplers have been released!! each of them was selected
by a famous japanese artist. I won't bother you with the titles.
* * * * *
the persuasions have a new cd out called "frankly a capella", a zappa
tribute. it's suppposed to be all zappa material and should feature
special guests: robert martin, bruce fowler and mike keneally.
* * * * *

* * * * * joe
satriani's new album "engines of creation" is scheduled for one of these
