SSVK & MICROCREDIT
Microcredit schemes are critical for breaking the cycle of poverty and for giving people a chance  to reduce the burden of debt.

To bring about change, SSVK is popularising the idea of each family making regular voluntary contributions into a community fund called
Gram Kosh.

To date,
20 lakh has been generated by SSVK and its community network, Lok Shakti Sangthan (LSS) through these contributions.

The LSS comprises a range of vibrant community organisations in 500 villages, covering 20,000 families.

The issues:
The
Gram Kosh has:
-reduced the cycle of debt
-reduced dependence on the money lenders
-sustained struggles for just wages and for access to and control over land & water resources
-given access to governmental development and welfare programmes
-funded campaigns agains the victimisation by the more powerful people and groups of the local society

"Tilaya's involvement in the organisational work started a few years ago, when the idea of a 'gram kosh' came to the region. She started collecting Rs5 per family, ... Slowly the gram kosh became a success and it was the males who got the much-needed support from the kosh at the time of their going to Punjab."
