Can anyone remember a character around 1945 to 53 in Fulwell, Sunderland? He was a elderly man, used to dress in a army great coat.

He had ginger hair and ginger beard and unfortunately the children used to make fum of him. His nickname was 'Teddy Bear Biscuit' and in the misty recesses of my mind I seem to remember the name Jack Casey.

I think he was a old boxer who had seen too much of the canvas because of a 'glass jaw'. Can anyone fill in any facts about this chap?

Hi everyone,

Hip, hip, hooray to Sue for a great site. I left home in 1965, homesickness is something we all have in common and Sue helps us to deal with it. I too miss the light nights, 9:30 is the latest daylight in NY. I miss all the things everyone else misses but mostly I miss just speaking my own language and being understood.

Has anyone else had a secret giggle when you hear someone say a word or a phrase that they have picked up from you and you know that they don't realize it? People at work have been heard to say 'any road up', 'It's a good job I didn't.... ' and 'stick it up your jumper'.

Hello Sue,

Your website seems to have grown each time I visit. I love all the news and know how time consuming it is to get something like this up and running. Your hard work is really appreciated.

Looking at the contacts I am reminded more and more of the song which used to introduce that radio programme in the '50s: Wot cheer Geordie! 'Where ever ye gan ye're sure te find a Geordie', tho' they seem to be in short supply in Munich at the moment (in spite of 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet'!).

The recent highlight for me was the match between Newcastle United and Munich 1860 last year. I have quite a lot to do with football matches and it was such a pleasure to get to work with a bunch of folk from home. However, nothing will ever beat the England-Germany game on 1 September 2001!!!!

Happy New Year Sue! The website is getting better each month.

I read the guest list regularly but I have yet to see anyone from Chester. I know I'm not the only one to emigrate! It is now 30 years since I left and I still haven't figured out why.

I am still very homesick, so if there are any visitors from Chester on site, please e mail!

Thanks.

Sue, this is a great web site. Graduated in '52 from Blaydon East Modern School. Before emigrating to Canda in '60, and subsequently California, I worked for the Civil Service, Longbenton. If anyone out there remembers me, drop a line!

Emotions ran high as a lasting memorial to wartime hero Cyril Barton was unveiled at Ryhope to tributes paid by past and present RAF officers.

A new housing development has been named Barton Park in his honour and a plaque outlining his bravery on the night of March 30, 1944, was unveiled by Squadron Leader Rodney Burges of RAF Leeming.

The final words on the plaque quote the citation for Mr Barton’s posthumous Victoria Cross: ‘In gallantly completing his last mission in the face of almost impossible odds, this officer displayed unsurpassed courage and devotion to duty.’ Find out more about Cyril's courage.
