Always a welcome sight, snowdrops herald the spring for many people. Alstonfield is to be found on the Derbyshire boarder near the attractive Dove valley where the river winds through a deap ravine. This is good walking country.
Parts of the parish church which is in the lane leading to Milldale date back to Norman times. Nearby was built the manor house in 1587, now a farm. The essayist and author Charles Cotton stayed here. He celebrated his native landscapes with works such as 'The Wonders of the Peake' (1681) describing the nearby river as the 'fair Dove, princess of rivers', and he also contributed to Izaac Walton's 'The Complete Angler' Good food, good ale and a warm welcome are to be had at the Watts Russell Arms.
