Oakamoor.

Copper was mined in the area and by the bridge crossing the river Churnet in the village is the site of the old copper works demolished in 1963. The picnic site here now shows little sign of the industy before. Now much loved by ramblers as the starting point for a days walking through the surrounding wooded hillsides.

In 1857 the copper works produced the first trans-Atlantic cable. Within a year it was broken. The factory did not get the contract to produce the next cable!
