The History of Kaladia

has largely been recorded throughout the ages in the songs and poetry of bards. The telling of events both great and small has long been the meat and drink of the minstrel. Unfortunately, when the event is not so great, one can rest assured that the bard's rendition will make it so. Although frequently embellished and sometimes grossly inaccurate, these are the versions of history which the common folk are most familiar with.

"So certain are we of our own intelligence and ingenuity that we overlook the efforts of our ancestors. It is unlikely that, after thousands of years, we have evolved to now be so uniquely creative that we may succeed in endeavors in which all others have previously failed.

Our arrogance clouds our wisdom with folly. Let not the past be forgotten, for it is not only the light which must guide us, it is the foundation upon which the future is built..."  Nadamis the Legender

Through the centuries, others have strived to maintain accurate accounts of important historical events. The ancient tablets of the dwarves, though partly destroyed during the War of the Winds, are among the most impressive records of the First Age. Unfortunately, the insight provided within is mostly limited to the dwarven race, and rarely deals with the continent of Kaladia in any case. The songs of the elves chronicle their history in extraordinary detail, beginning with the coronation of the first elven king early in the First Age. However, as these songs have been verbally passed on through their generations, inaccuracies and contradictions plague many of the earlier ballads. The majority of gnomes and halflings are notoriously less than assiduous in their record-keeping. The only humans known to have possessed accurate, written records during the First Age are the ancient historians of Tulmaria.

The New Age has no lack of historical accounts. The monastic scribes of the Belaran colonies, the sages of the Tulmarian nations, Kaladian historians and the legenders have compiled an impressive wealth of historical information. The text presented here represents the accumulated history of the nations and lands of the continent of Kaladia.

Calendars and Time-Keeping

methods in the lands of Kaladia assume many different forms. As the nations and races of Kaladia have grown and prospered, most have either lost or forsaken the original calendars of their homelands. There are three human calendars which are predominately utilized throughout Kaladia's lands: the Corlennian, Ruthanic and Kaladian calendar. Of the three, only the Kaladian calendar has been accepted by most of the nations of Kaladia, including the dwarves, elves, gnomes and halflings.

Six different calendars are displayed for ease of reference. These have been the most widely used calendars in existence, though they are not the only ones. Of the six, only the Kaladian continues to enjoy widespread use. The Corlennian calendar is limited now to the Corlennian heartland, and the Belaran calendar has almost completely disappeared.

Each of the calendars of human origin relies upon the Roil's orbit about the sun for its reference. As Roil's orbit is 360 days in length, each calendar consists of a 360 day year and they all begin on the day of the winter solstice, as does the elven calendar. The elves, because of their exceptionally long lifespan, or for some other mysterious reason, employ an extended calendar which essentially equates four standard human years to one elven year.

The Main Calendars Employed Upon Kaladia:

  • The Belaran Calendar

  • The Corlennian Calendar

  • The Kaladian Calendar

  • The Ruthanic (or Tulmarian) Calendar

  • The Dwarvish Calendar

  • The Elvish Calendar
