INTERNET EDITION SEPTEMBER 2006

Batch ‘82 adopted Sagana Elementary School

Our batch is celebrating its 25th jubilee in 2007 and preparations have begun for our class grand reunion. The ULSHS Batch ’82 Executive Committee is in full swing, raising funds and drumming up support for the grand reunion. We have to thank the incumbent officers for that, they are:

President: Geraldo Marcelo
Vice-President: Miguel Agustin
Secretary: Ma. Theresa Mina
Treasurer: Yolanda Miranda-Magsino
P R O: Paul Silverio
Liaison Officer: Henry Panganiban

As a civic contribution to the community, Sagana Elementary School, with 334 students and teachers, was adopted by Batch ’82. This project is in cooperation with the local government’s effort to "boost local students’ proficiency". (see Memorandum of Understanding posted under PHOTOS Adopt-a-School album)

The program consists of several phases, the first of which, the distribution of educational charts, was accomplished on the day of signing of Memorandum of Agreement. The next phase which includes, but is not limited to, the feeding program, was launched on July 28, 2006. This activity entails preparing and serving a meal for Sagana students twice a month. There have been three feedings to-date thus far, with the fourth scheduled for September 8th.

There are two fundraising choices fellow batch members can support, namely: purchase of class rings and subscription to Pambata Magazine. (Please contact Jerry Marcelo for more information.) And then, of course, there’s the simplest form of all, monetary donations. Donors have begun sending in funds to augment the costs of the feeding program. The file called ULSHS Funds, under Yahoo Group Files, lists the contributions made by U.S. and Canada-based alumni.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Danilo dela Cruz has resurfaced!

Let me point you back to our Yahoo Group message # 279 where Joel Gorospe called his friends, BJ and the DART. He was referring to Boying (Antonio Privado), Joel (himself), Dan (Danilo dela Cruz), Andres (Claudio), Ronald (Elefante) and Tony (Antonio Espina). Of the six guys in this group, Dan was the only one they couldn’t locate. Boying checked out the Class Directory and emailed Danilo's listed address. The rest, they say, is history...

Danilo works as the Purchasing Coordinator for Jarir Bookstore, an international company based in Saudi Arabia. He has been with Jarir for 15 years and goes home to the Philippines every summer. He has relocated his family in Las Piñas and stays there for the entire 45-day vacation he takes annually. He has two children, a boy aged 12, he described as “mas malaki pa sa tatay” and a girl, aged 7. He said that he hasn’t seen Santiago in almost ten years.

With that good news, here’s a plea to locate two groups of girls called JAGPAIL and GASFAME! Here are two clues, the F is not Francisca and J is Josephine! They know who they are, but can you guess?

RECENT NEWS

UPDATES

Rosalia Baldovino- Gutierrez is the lone representative of the Department of Education-Santiago City in the ongoing study program for teachers and educators in Thailand.

While in Santiago, Ronald was approached by Macita Kenept (4-B), now a teacher in Sagana Elementary School, who requested for a comfort room to be built as an extension to her classroom. Four guys, namely, Eloy, Michael, Moises and Ronald pledged to send the initial estimated amount to build it, pending the Executive Committee’s decision as to how it will be built.

GEMS from THE JOURNAL

Feed the hungry

Congratulations and hats off to the core group in-charge of the twice a month feedings in Sagana. I was there for the launching of the program on July 28, 2006 and it was quite an experience. How could one not feel the need to help these children, when most seem to be underweight, too small for their age or just plain unhealthy looking?

As far as I know, no one is pressed to support any given project. This is not a tangible object that we can put our names on but wouldn't “loving your neighbor” be a worthwhile project? Didn’t St. Paul say to Timothy that hypocrites are those who do not take care of the sick (and hungry) in their households?

How can we, especially those outside the Philippines, say that we are successful when if we look in our very own backyard we see sick and hungry children? Would you not feel squeamish standing on cold concrete while watching them? Don’t the pictures below prove the need to provide warm and healthy food to these children?

P.S.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HEEDED OUR PLEA TO HELP THE LIM FAMILY. YOU ARE A GLIMMER OF LIGHT FROM THE DISTANCE.

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

September 19th is the 55th Foundation Day celebration of the ULSHS. The missionaries of La Salette have served in Santiago City for over half a century. This year marks the return of St. James Parish, the last of the missions, to the Diocese of Ilagan. Turnover of the parish will be around Easter 2007, however, the University will remain under the administration of the La Salette Misssionaries.

The visiting image of Our Lady of La Salette was at ULSHS covered court on September 15, 2006. There was a vigil and batches '81 and '82 were in-charge of the novena from 10:00 PM - 8:45 AM.

According to Tere Mina, our participation in this year's Foundation Day celebrations was a merienda (palamig, hotdogs, etc) booth. They joined in the parade on September 17th and then our batch won a friendship game of basketball against this year's jubilarians, Batch '78, final score was 68-36.

MORE FOUNDATION DAY ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS WILL BE REPORTED IN OUR OCTOBER NEWSLETTER!
