MAGDALENA DOESN'T MAKE IT, LEAH GETS HER WALKING PAPERS
Magdalena , the 24-year old nursing student from Worcester, Massachusetts, is the first model eliminated after the photo shoot in Jamaica, receiving the news that she's not going with the other girls back to New York. Ironically, it is the girl who opens the envelope with Magdalena's bad news, 24-year old Leah from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who is next to go. After analyzing the photos from the shoot in Jamaica and meeting the girls themselves, the judges tell Leah that her rhythm was just too off and that she will not be moving on to the next round.

THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS
The girls arrive fresh from Los Angeles filled with excitement as they ride through the streets of New York in customized SUVs. Ann , the six time All-American, is optimistic. "I came into this being confident," she explains. "I think a lot of girls are intimidated by me." Norelle , the lone model to have braces, says of Ann, "She's so beautiful, and her face and her body look amazing."

The girls go to the roof of a building in the heart of Times Square, and as they look around in awe at giant billboards featuring supermodels, they spy Tyra. She says to them, "Look at those billboards, one of these girls might be you." In her next breath she tells the girls that they, like the city they are now in, won't be sleeping tonight as they are getting their first assignment: "a sexy, freaky deaky bikini shoot" in Jamaica.

BEST FRIENDS FOREVER
Eva , the 19-year old student from Los Angeles, continues to make waves, taking aim at Kelle , the 20-year old gallery owner from New York, New York. She gets sick of hearing Kelle say that she grew up in a gated community, saying, "She's so whitewashed it's not even funny." Eva's advice for Kelle is, "Love it, embrace it, you're black."

But Eva does have a softer side, and she shows it when Ann begins to freak out on the flight down to Jamaica. As the plane hits a rough patch, Ann starts to have a meltdown. She calls out to a sleeping Eva, "Mama, I need you." Ann lays her head down in Eva's lap and eventually calms down, though not before all the girls take note of her fragility.

Following the crazy flight, the girls step off the plane into the Jamaican breeze and are overjoyed. They make their way to the Rockhouse Hotel, and are met by Jay Manuel (Mr. Jay) and J. Alexander (Miss J.) Jay introduces the girls to the crew they will be working with, which includes photographer Nick Cardallicio, make-up artist Mathu Anderson, Michelle (wardrobe) and Danilo, the resident hair-stylist.

Jay lets the girls know that while 14 flew to Jamaica, only 13 will be going back to New York, and then that there will be yet another cut when they get back to the Big Apple.

COMPETITION HEATS UP
As everybody gets ready for the first photo-shoot, insecurities bubble to the surface. Magdalena says, "I'm looking at these girls and they are hot." One by one the girls bikini up, throw on a pair of heels and head out to a coral reef to take direction from Nick, Miss J. and Mr. Jay. Amanda , the legally blind mother from Hendersonville, North Carolina, is told to "unleash that crazy side," Kelle is admonished to stop looking "hoochie-mama" and be "more couture," while Ann is told that she's "looking a little porno."

When the shoot is done, Nick the photographer weighs in with his thoughts that Leah was too self-conscious, but Yaya definitely blew everybody away. Jay Manuel thinks Yaya is on fire, adding, "She's working as if the rent was due tomorrow." Nick, Miss J. and Mr. Jay send the photos up to Tyra, who looks at them on her laptop, and the four of them critique the girls together.

At breakfast the next morning with the girls, Mr. Jay comments on the photos from the day before: "About a handful were good, some were mediocre and some were just bad." He places an envelope on the breakfast table, lets the girls know there is a name inside it, and departs. Leah leaps to grab the envelope, saying, "I wanted to read it because if it was me I wanted to see my name." It ends up not being her name--it is Magdalena. Though upset, Magdalena feels good about having tried, and doesn't fault herself for giving it a shot.

MOVIN' ON UP
The girls are met at the airport in New York by a limo SUV, and inside it, they find their first piece of Tyra Mail. It reads, "I've arranged for this ride, to the East Side, where all you girls are now going to reside..." The girls find out they are staying at the world famous Waldorf-Astoria and go nuts. During the ride to the hotel, Ann and Eva talk about rooming together, and Eva is definitely into it. Ann then starts telling the other girls that if there is conflict in choosing the rooms they can sort it out using "rock, paper, scissors."

As the girls pour into the hotel and head up to the suite, they can't contain their joy as they wander from room to room, each one more fascinating than the last. At the same time they scope out their digs, they start deciding which room they want by placing their personalized pillow (with each individual models' face on it) on their preferred bed. Leah loves The Fitting Room because it's pink and she loves pink, while Julie gets excited about the Couture Club and its silky trappings. Meanwhile, Eva is so excited she forgets to grab a bed, which means she and Ann aren't able to be roomies. Ann tries to get the other girls to understand how important it is that she and Eva room together, but they just don't care. Eva says, "As much as I love Ann, I'm just going to be Eva."

Ann has a really hard time not rooming with Eva. She confronts Eva in front of the other girls, saying, "Did you not want to room with me?" Eva really doesn't know what to say to this and tells Ann though they're really close they barely know each other. Ann starts to sob and says, "I love you. I will be friends with you forever. You will be in my wedding." Eva gives her a big hug and calms her down...again. The other girls definitely think Ann's behavior is off-putting. Cassie from Norman, Oklahoma, thinks, "Ann doesn't know how to be confident and independent on her own," while Toccara just calls her "co-dependent."

UPTOWN GIRL
Kelle's continuous rap about her privileged upbringing has been wearing on the other girls' nerves. Jennipher from Idaho says, "Kelle is on everybody's list."

A package arrives at the house. It's a Sidekick© from T-Mobile. The message on it reads that there is going to be a special dinner at the house at 8:30 that evening. The girls primp and put on their very best, and when Tyra enters their home they go crazy, thrilled to be in such close proximity to their favorite model.

Tyra sits down and tells the girls that nobody is perfect and they need to be receptive to positive and negative feedback. She admits that she has cellulite and tells the girls, "Your job is to make the public think you are perfect. You are not. None of us are." She then goes around the room and asks each of the girls to point out their flaws.

Ann goes first and talks about having a bump on her nose. Yaya is next, who rocked the swimsuit shoot, and talks about how she has bad skin. Toccara says her thighs rub together, and when Leah says her forehead is too big, Tyra laughs because she was always told she had a "five-head." Then it's Kelle's turn and what she says sets the house off. She turns and says that in her profile she has a monkey mouth and thinks it's "primitive." Tyra goes a little ashen and all the other girls cannot believe Kelle just said what she did. The room, literally, goes dead.

After Kelle's room silencing comment, Toccara, a woman who tells it like it is, says to Kelle, "A lot of people have bad things to say about you." When she elaborates that people think Kelle is spoiled, Kelle tries to defend herself, asking through her tears, "How am I spoiled?" She says, "I don't have any friends here. It hurts so much. It's really hard." Amanda, who is a mother in her own right, gets maternal and tells Kelle, "It's easy for somebody else to pass judgment." Kelle still doesn't really get it. Pointing at her pants she says, "They're Gucci. I can't help it, that's what they are." Amanda goes in for the hug and tells her it's going to be okay, which makes Kelle feel better.

MEET THE JUDGES
It's time to meet the judges and for them to make their first cut. Before that happens Tyra reminds the girls what they are here for. The winner will receive a contract with Ford Models, will be shot by Gilles Bensimon for Elle magazine, and will get a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl.

First there's returning judge Janice Dickinson, the first supermodel, and next to her is fellow returning judge Nigel Barker, a noted fashion photographer, and next to him is Nolé Marin, a renowned fashion stylist.

Each of the girls comes forward, and Tyra shows them their best shot from the shoot, and then critiques, along with her fellow judges, both the picture from the shoot and their sense of personal style.

Yaya goes first and her worst fears are confirmed when Tyra tells her that the photographer thought she had a poor complexion and she'll have to work on that. Ann is next and Tyra tells her the photographer said she was "the worst." Norelle is told that she's too tight in the face and that she needs to loosen up. Eva is chastised for looking too "music-videoish," so Janice tells her to look at Elle and Vogue and see what the other girls are doing today. Tyra tells Amanda that her eyebrow move is a little too Zoolander, which makes Janice laugh, adding, "I used to do that but now I have too much Botox in my face." Toccara is told she might give the "skinny bitches" a run for their money, while Julie gets high marks for her innovative pigeon-like pose.

Nigel points out to Leah that the one picture chosen was the one that did not show her "mad eyes." The judges then do an impromptu makeover of Leah, starting with Nolé telling her to lose the pearls. Tyra suggests throwing off the jacket, and everybody chimes in for her to muss up her hair. Tyra says, "Now there's a model," and Leah throws her hands up in the air in triumph.

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST
The judges talk amongst themselves. Ann's drive is seriously questioned, Jennipher's hair is too long and Leah's eyes are too intense. Tyra calls Leah the "soccer mom" and wants the judges to rise to the challenge of breaking the soccer mom out of her and replacing it with a little edginess.

When the judges are finished with their deliberations the girls are called back into the judging room. Tyra tells them she has 12 photos in her hand and begins to call them out one by one. Yaya is first, and then Tyra calls Kristi , Julie, Jennipher, and Kelle. After that, Cassie, Toccara, Nicole , Eva and Norelle come forward. It's down to three girls for only two places. Tyra calls Amanda's name, leaving Ann and Leah. She asks the remaining two to both come forward.

To Leah she says, "At your photo shoot it was difficult for the photographer to capture you because you were so off." To Ann, Tyra says she is going to have to step it up, commenting, "You were dead." She reminds them both that the girl she does not call has to immediately pack her belongings and leave. She flips over the page. She quietly says, "Ann," and Leah turns and heads out of the room. Despite this setback, she isn't defeated: "I know I could have done better. I didn't get the job but that does not mean that you're not going to see me out there."
