I WANT TO GO HOME: CASSIE CONCEDES
Even though Norelle , the 19-year-old sales associate from Newport Beach, California, continues to have difficulty walking the model walk, Cassie , the 19-year-old student from Norman, Oklahoma, is the one who doesn't have what it takes to continue in the running towards becoming America's Next Top Model.
GO-SEE NEARLY BECOMES NO-SEE
Cassie is definitely homesick, and over the phone she explains to her boyfriend C.J. how her life will be turned upside down if she wins. When she tells him that he would have to come to New York he says, "I wouldn't want to just pick up and leave Oklahoma."
Yaya , the 21-year-old-student from Harlem, New York, tells Toccara , the 22-year-old student from Dayton, Ohio, she really shouldn't leave her food beneath her bed. Toccara replies, "My momma eats in her sleep." Later she adds, "I love myself. I love my curves." In the kitchen Norelle reveals she wishes she had some of Toccara's self-confidence. Norelle says, with respect to her stomach, "I would like it to be more ab-by, I still have it too flabby."
Tyra calls and tells the girls to have flats and heels at the ready. They head out the door and meet Tyra, who announces, "It's time to send you out to see the sharks." She explains they will be heading out on go-sees, which is when a model goes out and demonstrates for designers why she should walk in a runway show. When Tyra says, "We have put together portfolios…" some of the girls are excited like Eva , the 19-year-old student from Los Angeles, California, while others like Ann , the 21-year-old student from Erie, Pennsylvania, are less thrilled because she feels her photos to date have not been that great. At the same time, Ann feels, "I'm pretty in person, people like me in person."
Tyra explains that the girls will be judged on "overall looks, walk, and personality." The girl that wins the contest by getting the most praise will get a rack of clothes from the designers they are going to see. On their agenda for the day, five of the top designers in New York City: Diane von Furstenberg, Nanette Lepore, Marc Bouwer, Cynthia Rowley and Nicole Miller.
First stop is Nicole Miller and she is casting her Miller Girl collection--looking for a "peppy" young face. Toccara loves Nicole Miller's clothes and feels very comfortable. Norelle admits to feeling, "Funny, retarded, and quirky." Norelle's worst feelings surface when she walks for Nicole Miller, who holds up her hands and says, "No. No. No. No. No." Things don't go that much better for Amanda, the 25-year-old mother from Hendersonville, North Carolina, who forgets her heels and is forced to wear Norelle's, which are a size and a half too small.
To even out the playing field, Amanda decides she needs to buy some shoes that fit her. Toccara, Ann, Eva and Cassie tag along even though there are only fifteen minutes between their go-see appointments. They emerge from the shoe store to find their ride gone and have absolutely no idea where their next appointment is. Chaos ensues. They frantically run back to Nicole Miller's, causing a commotion, as they ask for help finding the next address on the itinerary. Ann is upset when she is momentarily separated from Eva. Upon getting the info, the girls run through the streets of New York, hair flying, shopping bags in hand.
Meanwhile, the other girls who weren't shopping, Nicole, the 21-year-old former punk rocker from Minot, North Dakota, Norelle and Yaya arrive in plenty of time for the next appointment with Nanette Lepore. The on time girls wait impatiently. The other girls show up twenty minutes late and the designer is most displeased. Amanda takes responsibility for the tardiness thinking it might earn her some points but it doesn't. Nanette calls Amanda "hippie-ish", and Eva "piggie-ish".
Norelle has such difficulty walking, that both Diane Von Furstenburg and Cynthia Rowley say, "She can't walk." Toccara has trouble finding clothes she can fit into and she admits that she finds it "frustrating." The next stop is Marc Bouwer, for whom walking is very important, and he comes away very impressed with Ann and Yaya. When it comes to Cassie, Marc measures her thighs and tells her that he prefers a smaller sized hip. Cassie is annoyed at the comment.
It falls to Marc to tell the girls their totals from the visits to the five designers and he reels them off from Lowest to Highest:
Norelle: 170
Nicole: 178.5
Toccara: 181
Cassie: 184
Eva: 188.5
Amanda: 188.5
Marc then pauses and says the last two girls were running neck and neck. He says Yaya had 211, but then he reveals Ann's score to be 207.5--Yaya is the winner. When Marc reminds her she gets to choose a friend, she selects Nicole and together the two of them share in the spoils of Yaya's victory.
Both Toccara and Norelle go to bed feeling down about their day. In a conversation with her mom, Norelle says, "I'm giving it my all. I might not be good enough now I'll be good enough some day." Her mom replies, "You're good enough now."
THE TWO FACES OF TOP-MODELDOM
The girls have a night out at the Suburnt Cow and share how they feel about the competition. Cassie lets on she didn't appreciate Marc Bouwer's comments about her hip-size. Norelle lets her guard down over dinner and begins to loosen up, laying a playful kiss on Ann on the ride home. Feeling giddy, Eva, Ann, Norelle and Amanda decide to have an impromptu jacuzzi party. Meanwhile, Yaya and the others toast to their success in another room. On the phone, Cassie finds out her uncle is sick and says she wants to go home.
Tyra Mail comes in and it reads:
From week to week
The stress is getting worse
Tomorrow you'll double over from all the strain…
The girls show up at their location and see a hip-hop dude hanging out with his baseball cap pulled down around his eyes. As he lifts up his head the girls see that the hip-hop star is none other than Miss J. He informs them that Jay Manuel won't be making it today but has sent somebody in his stead, and out comes a diva in a red dress, who the girls agree is pretty ugly. Cassie thinks, "Gross." But it turns out be none other than Jay Manuel dressed up to look like a woman to demonstrate the power of "transformation." Jay asks, "Do you have what it takes to become a completely different persona?"
He goes on to explain that today's shoot will be the girls play-acting at two extremely opposite personas and then the two different images will be put together. The challenge is for it to look like the two alter egos are interacting. Jay introduces the girls to their photographer, Davide, then explains the centerpiece of the shoot will be a Ford Mustang.
Norelle goes first and rocks it as Amazon-woman in one shot, and in a simple black dress in the other. Ann is nervous, knowing that if she takes one more bad picture she's going home. For her two poses, she's made up as a snotty rich girl in one, and covered in liquid black latex in the other. Cassie doesn't quite understand her dominatrix-esque outfit and seems perhaps distracted by her uncle whose health is failing. Yaya enjoys her shoot as a 17th Century courtesan interacting with her alter ego. Toccara is very upset by one of her outfits, an orange blouse for a parking valet, "I want to know why all the girls are so nice looking and I look like I'm at Home Depot." She gets into a brouhaha with the stylist when she gets pinched during her fitting. In her alter ego shot, she's dressed in an elegant blue gown with a platinum blonde wig.
Toccara's shoot is flat. Jay says, "Toccara needs to let down that wall." She's upset that she let other people get her down and did not maintain her positive attitude. After the shoot she shares with Yaya her feelings. "I'm just trying to stay positive and it's hard. Everybody's like, 'Are you trying to lose weight?'"
THE HOUSE OF JE NE SAIS QUOI
This week Marc Bouwer serves as the guest judge. As it was the week of the go-see, Tyra says that the challenge will be for the girls to sell themselves to the fictional house of fashion known as Je Ne Sais Quoi. The "house" will be made up of all the judges--Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin, Tyra and Marc Bouwer.
For their part, the judges ham it up. The girls get a gander at the first Je Ne Sais Quoi outfit, which is an black dress with a black sequin sash covering the nose and mouth, and are asked what they think of it. When Nigel asks Eva if it is something she would like to wear she says, "It wouldn't be my everyday wear but I would definitely rock it." When Yaya goes before the "house," Janice affects a fake French accent and hits at Yaya's acknowledged weak spot, saying, "Do you have a little skin problem?" Tyra goes over the top and says to Cassie, "I want my muse to live with me." Cassie appears confused. When the judges tell Ann that they all live together Ann admits, "Frankly, that's a little odd."
Toccara knows how to work it and brings the strength of all of her personality to her meeting. She says, "If this campaign is really a big campaign, why not make it larger than life?" With that she launches into an impromptu strut, which thrills Nolé and Tyra, but leaves Janice non-plussed.
ME AND MY ALTER-EGO
After the fun of Je Ne Sais Quoi it's time for the serious business of evaluations and first on the chopping block is Eva. In evaluating the alter-ego shot, Marc Bouwer says, "It took me a while to not realize they were both you," as he looks at the double-image. Janice even throws Eva a compliment, saying, "Finally we don't see right up your nostrils."
Ann is next and Marc tells her that he sees great potential in her. Then it's Cassie's turn and Tyra takes her to task for the way she reacted in the casting for Je Ne Sais Quoi. When it comes to her photos the judges feel Cassie lacks energy. Tyra says, "The make-up is fierce. The hair is fierce. The face is too relaxed. Kind of pushing through not bursting through." Nigel exhorts her to, "Realize how gorgeous you are."
Norelle walks out and Tyra immediately asks her to turn it up a notch. She tells her to shake it up and throw a hand on her hip, which makes her look more model-like immediately. "There's confidence now." Nigel notices something very important and points it out to Norelle, "It's almost as if you have to be dressed up in costume to become fierce."
Janice unloads on Toccara for her wild walk during the interview with House of Je Ne Sais Quoi. Tyra on the other hand thinks Toccara has what it takes to deal with the crazy world of modeling and says, "Fantabulous." But Janice really is sticking to her guns saying she doesn't think Toccara is versatile enough.
As the judges review the photos, Ann earns the highest marks. Everybody is very impressed by how much she has grown. And though Amanda's photos are her worst so far, Marc believes, "If she builds a strong editorial book, she can have a successful career." Nolé admits he's never been a big fan of Norelle but says she's growing on him.
Nolé is underwhelmed by Toccara this week, even though he is typically her biggest fan. Marc says, "She's not America's Next Top Model. She will never be." Tyra defends Toccara by invoking Kate Moss, saying people never thought a shorter model would make it. The judges get into it as they deliberate who should be the next to go. Toccara because she is just too big or Cassie because she is not bringing it?
AND THEN THERE WERE SEVEN
The girls are called back in and Tyra begins to read off the names. Eva is the first name called, and Tyra says, "This picture is to die for." Ann is next, and Tyra asks, "What happened to the girl that couldn't take pictures?" Ann is followed by Yaya, Norelle, Amanda and Nicole.
Toccara and Cassie are the last two remaining and Tyra asks them to step forward. She then speaks to both of them, of their strengths and weaknesses and relative positions with the judges. "One of you seems to have such joy, and such a vivacious and contagious personality. The other doesn't seem like they want to be here at all. One of you a lot of the judges really believe in. The other a lot of the judges feel like there's no place for her in this industry--that's the way it is. That's the way it has always been."
In the end, Tyra shows a picture of Toccara who is thrilled to have survived another cut. In her exit interview, Cassie reveals how she kind of saw it coming, "I had a feeling it would be me because I was unhappy. I just don't have what it takes to be a Top Model. I just want to go home and be with my boyfriend."
