TOCCARA CHECKS OUT
The girls get fashion tips from a stylist and learn public relations spin from a pair of savvy pros as they continue to push forward in their quest to become America's Next Top Model. However, Toccara , the 22-year-old student from Dayton, Ohio with dreams of being the first plus-sized supermodel, does not make the cut as her supersized personality has been beaten down by the grueling competition.
STYLE AND CLASS
Tyra opens her heart to her mother as she talks about the difficulty of dealing with the recently departed Cassie and her eating disorder. Tyra's mom reminds her that you can only do so much for a person that is lost, and tells Tyra that Cassie has her own soul-searching to do. "She needs to look within to find the strength she needs."
Ann , the 21-year-old student from Erie, Pennsylvania, answers a knock at the door to find Rebecca Weinberg, an Emmy Award winning stylist, and Paul Wilmot and Hampton Carney of Paul Wilmot Communications, waiting. They are going to school the girls on how to handle high-profile events from how to dress to what to talk about.
Yaya , the 21 year-old-student from Harlem, New York, is the first to sit down with the publicists and after she proudly tells them of her Ivy League pedigree, Hampton's advice to her is, "Never think you know all the answers." While Yaya gets grilled on the PR front, Rebecca takes Amanda to task for her "cheap" wardrobe. Eva has to face the music from the PR team and they tell her to tone the diva down. Yaya continues to butt heads with the groomers, as compromise is not part of her vocabulary. Rebecca agrees that Yaya shouldn't compromise but suggests she might try a softer approach when going out for a casting for something like a toothpaste ad, saying, "Are you going to go in a dashiki or jeans? Mix it up a little." Rebecca doesn't have kind words for Toccara either, "These are throwaway clothes." She goes on to tell Eva she needs to broaden her horizons and not be so "eclectic and comfortable."
Later on that day, Yaya and Toccara discuss the critiques and Yaya makes it clear that she doesn't want to change. Paul leaves the girls saying, "Make millions. Make millions."
A DINNER, A JOKE, AND A DRY RUN DOWN THE RED CARPET
At a group dinner at Uncle Jack's steakhouse, the girls review their experiences with the stylists and the publicists. When Tyra joins them, they get a chance for some quality time and make the most of it. Norelle says, "I feel so blessed to be here." Tyra agrees that the girls are in a privileged position: "It's a luxury to get to hear what people say about you." Toccara wants to know what Tyra thinks of the plus-sized market. Tyra says, "It reminds me of what they were saying about black models forty years ago--before Beverly Johnson, before Iman, before Naomi Sims. You have to be better than all the girls at the table."
The girls go their separate ways and then Tyra Mail arrives back at the house. Nicole, Ann and Eva decide to play a practical joke on the rest of the house. Nicole reads, "Pack your bags. You have 20 minutes to be in Europe!" Everybody starts freaking out while Eva, Ann and Nicole are just dying of laughter. Yaya is not amused. She says, "I did not realize I was going to feel like I was in junior high school."
The real Tyra Mail gets read and it says something about a 21st Century "Red Carpet Ride." The girls head down to Century 21--the premier shopping spot in Manhattan, to find off-the-rack fashion at less than off-the-rack prices. They walk in the door and are greeted by Rebecca Weinberg once again and she's got a challenge for them. "Put together a head-to-toe look for a daytime event--in fifteen minutes."
It's a mad dash through the store as the girls try to heed the counsel of their personal stylist. While the other girls run all over the store, excitedly searching for the outfit that will put them over the top, Toccara has trouble finding an outfit because of her size. When time is up, Rebecca tells the girls they need to go home and get ready for their daytime event.
DONT SPILL THE BEANS ON THE RED CARPET
When the girls get to their destination they are immediately thrust into a red-carpet scenario. Cameras, interviewers, a large TV screen--the works. Eva, in her trendy top and long skirt goes first and the first thing she hears, once she recovers from all the flashes' going off in her face is, "Eva. Eva. Eva." When she's done running the gauntlet, a microphone is thrust in her face by Sarah Pyper of US Weekly magazine who asks her some very personal questions about the house. Eva refuses to answer in a way that would incriminate anyone in the house. She recalls what her trainers told her: "Never disclose a name. Never do anything that would pinpoint a person."
Yaya, in her beige Moschino top appears taken aback by the experience. "I was not prepared for what was going on," she later says. Norelle, in her orange jacket, is even less prepared because she breaks the cardinal rule and gives a name--Yaya--when asked about who she clashes with in the house. The whole processional pretty much comes to a screeching halt when Sarah Pyper turns to Toccara in her multi-colored outfit and asks, "Who are you wearing?" Toccara haltingly replies, "Jean Paul…" and then mangles, "Gaultier." Sarah considers this a major faux pas.
At the end of the red-carpet walk, the girls convene and Norelle tells Yaya that she did mention her name as somebody with a "wall up" in the house. Sarah goes through and tells all the girls how they did, noting that Norelle slipped up and that Yaya had a bit of "diva syndrome." But Yaya's diva-ness doesn't stop her from taking the prize--she is the winner for the day. Yaya is then given the opportunity to choose one other person, and, showing her generosity and willingness to open up, chooses Norelle.
For winning the contest Yaya and Norelle are treated to a feast from the chefs at NU Kitchen. Over dinner, Norelle and Yaya discuss their differences. Norelle says, "I understand where you're coming from." Yaya explains, "There is a wall with nine blocks that spell out competition." Yaya also takes time to compliment Norelle, saying, "When I hear you speak you say profound things."
IT TAKES A SPIDER TO MAKE SILK
Tyra Mail arrives, and the girls get very excited when they hear what it has to say: "Tomorrow you will be draped in the finest silk in the world…" They head down to a studio for some beauty shots and are greeted by Jay Manuel and the photographer for the day, Bill Diodato. Best of all it's a shoot with diamonds! With the competition just past the halfway point, Jay knows the girls well enough to throw advice their way, as when he says to Ann, "I'd be in the mirror practicing your face."
After all the girls get dressed and primped, Jay tells them they will be shooting with somebody to make it extra special. That somebody turns out to be a spider--a tarantula no less. The normally tough Eva immediately begins freaking out. "I don't like spiders. It's a horrible phobia I've always had." Ann, with her typical tough girl attitude, is not bothered: "A stupid spider is not going to stop me from my dreams."
During the photo shoot, Yaya works it and Norelle doesn't. Jay comments that Norelle "only feels comfortable with a face full of make-up and a camera pulled off of her." Toccara is not feeling it, and it shows. After Bill finishes with her she walks backstage and confers with Yaya, who tells her to go see what photographer Bill and Jay are saying. She hears Bill say of her shots, "I did the best I could," which does not sound encouraging. Ann's shoot doesn't go so well. Jay says to her, "Help me help you overcome this." They have to shoot 125 frames to get one shot. Jay sums up the Ann experience: "She's consistently flat on film."
Meanwhile Eva continues to lose it. She starts to cry in the middle of her shoot. Somehow, someway, she not only gets through it, but manages beautifully.
WHAT KIND OF CAT IS IN THAT HAT?
The girls head to the judging panel to see their favorite people--Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin and this week's guest judge, Rebecca Weinberg. Arrayed before the girls are five different hats and Rebecca says, "You have 10 minutes to build your image around your hat of choice."
The girls scramble to pull something together and then re-emerge for their critiques. Nicole who has gone for a biker look complete with studded dog collar kind of scares Nigel. "It's too fantasy, not fashion," says Rebecca. When it's Toccara's turn, Tyra says that her cowgirl outfit doesn't really sparkle, telling her, "You've checked out." Nigel is disappointed by how defeated Toccara seems, "Install the personality chip back in." The panel is very impressed with Amanda's outfit, a simple black hat with a veil and a black top. "Head-to-toe you're perfection," says Tyra. Her picture however is too old school; Nigel calls it "40s." Ann, who had chosen the same hat as Toccara, suffers the same fate. Nigel says, "Disaster." Rebecca adds, "The skirt is hideous." Nigel again nails Ann for being gorgeous but not being a model. Norelle scores points and gets serious praise in her floaty white skirt and black hat with veil; even Nigel says, "You look lovely." Rebecca adds, "Red lips and attitude would take it to the next level." Tyra gives her a tip on her photo, "Your mouth is tense, open it up a little bit."
Eva's outfit does not win her any prizes. The combination of motorcycle hat, leather skirt and heels lead Rebecca to say, "It kind of looks like a go-go dancer on the way home after a night out." However, her photo is highly praised. Janice even gives it a 10. The third time is the charm for the cowboy hat as Nigel digs Yaya's outfit and says that he thinks she looks "gorgeous." He adds, "I think everyone thought you were going to go for the African hat." Nolé says she looks like she's going to go for a ride on a giraffe, and things get ugly after Rebecca says, "You have this intensity to sort of prove your African-ness, it's overbearing, it's too much, it's a layer on top of a layer." This sets Yaya off, and she disses the fabric of the African style hat, calling it fake. Nigel tries to intercede, but she just keeps rolling. Tyra also thinks Yaya has gone too far: "There's a different way to explain yourself. This is not attractive." Her photo is her saving grace. Janice throws her arms up and says, "Gorgeous."
CUTTING IT DOWN TO SIX
The judges deliberate and Toccara scores low points for mentally checking out. Nigel adds, "She's become a shell, a ghost of her original self." Nolé is so thrilled by Yaya's photo he calls her a chocolate Barabarella, however her attitude is bumming Tyra out. Tyra adds that she has a "condescending attitude." Rebecca comments that Ann is not interested in her self-image, which is definitely a shortcoming in a model.
The girls are called back in, and Tyra begins to read off the names. Nicole is the first to hear her name called. Tyra calls Eva next, commending her for combating her fear. Next are Amanda and Yaya. Even though Yaya's name is called, Tyra still takes her to task. "This picture is amazing. This look is not amazing." Then Yaya apologizes to the judges and walks away. Tyra doesn't let her off that easy and calls her back to apologize for her comments about the African hat. After Tyra calls Norelle's name, only Ann and Toccara remain.
Tyra tells the pair, "The modeling industry is about drive." To Ann she says, "I saw a competitor." As she looks at them she says, "Neither of you look like models. Neither of you even look like models in the making." Tyra pauses and then calls Ann's name. Disappointed but still upbeat Toccara says in her exit interview, "I honestly feel like I should be in the final three. But I'm the biggest girl to get this far. It doesn't happen overnight."
