TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE: ANN AXED
Ann , the 21-year-old student from Erie, Pennsylvania, and Eva , the 19-year-old student from Los Angeles, California, are still at each other's throats as the contest nears its end, but Ann is the one sent home after she is unable to deliver a winning photo this late in the game.
SEXY TOKYO STREETS
Tyra Mail arrives and the girls read:
Do fashion designers inspire street style?
Or does street style inspire fashion designers?
They hit the Tokyo streets and meet style maven Sawa Vaughters at the J-Pop Cafe, who presents them with four living examples of Tokyo street fashion. All the girls are surprised by what they see but manage not to say anything that might offend. Ann thinks, "Wow, where was your mirror this morning?" Yaya , the 21-year-old from Harlem, New York, later says of the young Japanese models, "Wow. This is not a joke. They're serious--this is an every day get up?"
Sawa tells the girls she has some clothes and they need to create their version of Tokyo Street Style. Ann quickly becomes frustrated when she can't find anything to wear because of her height. "I'm 5'11". There is nothing out there." Amanda , the 25-year-old mother from Hendersonville, North Carolina, tries to help by sharing with Ann the clothes she has found: "I was giving her the shirt off of my back."
The girls emerge from the dressing room to get pointers from Sawa. To Amanda she says, "You coordinate very well." Then she tells Yaya, "Your style is very good." She looks Ann up and down and says, "You could add more color." Despite the fact that Eva and Ann have grown apart, Eva can still tell when her friend is not happy. "Ann was just pissed."
Sawa explains that the girls' challenge will be to coordinate a Tokyo Street Style outfit, with a "Babydoll Lolita" theme. Armed only with a T-Mobile sidekick, a Tokyo city Atlas and 20,000 yen (about $200.00) in spending money they are told they can only shop at four specific stores. Once dressed, they need to arrive at the pressroom of the fashion designer Milk by 6PM. The four stores are: Metamorphose, Closet Child, Who's a Yellow Ruby and Maria's Closet. If they are late to Milk they are disqualified. The winner of the challenge gets to meet a very, very important person in the fashion industry.
EVA THE DIVA IS TRIUMPHANT
The four girls start pounding the pavement in the humid streets of Tokyo, scouring for the stores where they will find their outfit. Amanda feels at a disadvantage because of her blindness. She says, "When you're looking for something, vision is important." Eventually she finds Metamorphose, which is nothing but Baby Doll, and she makes the decision that it will be the only store she is going to shop in.
Yaya stops in at Maria's Closet and quickly drops 10,000 yen but keeps on shopping. Ann finds herself caught in a "Let's Make a Deal' world trying to decide between "door number one" and "door number two." Eva and Ann are both totally confused and begin to rely on the kindness of strangers. Eva calls out, "Banana!" when she sees Ann on the street. It's a moment of rekindling and reconciliation. Ann is thrilled: "Before this challenge we were not at each other's throats but…separate. That was all thrown out the window because we both needed help."
While Ann, Eva and Yaya are panic stricken and wandering the rainy streets Amanda sits and applies make-up in preparation for the six o'clock rendezvous. Ann and Eva stop in front of Metamorphose but don't see it, wandering the streets for a while longer. Eventually when they enter, Ann is disappointed that this is what she was holding out for. Her strategy becomes, "I just had to buy whatever is there and make it work." Ann and Eva get all dolled up and make it to Milk by the appointed time.
Yaya on other hand desperately wants a kimono and while she finds one it leaves her with only two minutes to get to the pressroom. While the other girls put the finishing touches on their outfits, all of which have similar leggings, Yaya is still making her way to the meeting-point. Amanda is fearful that Yaya will miss the time and says, "I hope she's not standing out in front of the store-face." Which, unfortunately is exactly what she's doing. Even though she's on time, she blows right past the second story pressroom and misses the event.
The three who have made it enter the pressroom and are greeted by Shingo and Hitomi, who are surprised to find just three girls. Yaya shows up later but they send her back to the hotel--her streak of five challenge wins in a row finally comes to an end. Amanda walks for Shingo and Hitomi and they tell her she's too old. They ask Ann about her look but aren't exactly won over. Eva goes last and bubbles over with enthusiasm. The three girls are called back in and Eva is named the winner.
Eva sums up her philosophy: "My idea was find things that don't go together and look really stupid and you'll win." Eva chooses Ann to be her pal at breakfast the next morning.
DIAMONDS AND ANIME
Eva wakes up at 6:30AM, very excited to meet her special guest. She and Ann head to a very fancy part of town and are met by Toyohiko Mikimoto. Eva knows who he is immediately while Ann has to pretend that she has a clue. They have breakfast together and then head over to the high-end jewelry store that Mr. Mikimoto presides over. Ann and Eva turn into kids in a candy store. After Mr. Mikimoto walks them through the store, he sits them down and says, "This is how we treat very important clients," handing them pearl necklaces.
Ann is thrilled. "This is something that will last me for the rest of my life. I'm so thankful she picked me; we're still Ann and Eva even though we had some marriage problems." Eva knows she hit the jackpot and taunts the absent Yaya, "Yaya, your five things total don't even add up to this." Together they skip off back to their homestay.
Tyra Mail arrives and Eva reads:
For one of you your future as a Top Model is drawing closer
Get ready to handle life in the fast lane…
The girls debate whether it's going to be runway or a shoot. Ann is hoping for runway: "I'm always first on the runway." They get off the elevator and are met by Jay, who tells them, "I've designed the whole shoot around a very popular street style." Jay lays into Ann and tells her off-handedly, "You're lucky you're still here. You barely got a photograph."
The girls finish getting made-up and head out to their own custom RV and roll through the streets of Tokyo. When they get out of the Winnebago, Jay Manuel and Miss J. meet them on a busy Tokyo street. Jay advises them, "You girls are going to be on bikes but you gotta look like you're in motion." Miss J. adds to Ann's woes: "I have a habit of throwing you the kitchen sink and you never throw me back a bathtub, you throw me back bathwater."
Ann takes it personally and feels like Miss J. should have told all the girls something and not just singled her out. When it's shoot time, Jay thinks Amanda nailed it. Miss J. tells Yaya before her shoot, "Leave education behind." Yaya asks the photographer to hold on one second, and nearly falls off the bike. Jay says, "Yaya's giving me attitude and she's slowly making me dislike her." Jay wants Eva to bring it more, "More grrr. More grrr." In the end he feels Eva falls flat.
When it's Ann's turn, Jay tells her, "You're a cosmopolitan model, and you've traveled the world. Give it to me." After an initial flurry, Jay stops the shoot and tries to get something more out of Ann. He tells her she looks incredible. He tells her the backdrop is amazing. She can only cry and say, "I feel like I don't even deserve to be here. Anytime anybody says something it only makes it worse." He begs of her in a last-ditch attempt to inspire, asking, "Did you at least see the Matrix?" Then he adds, "You look like a flight attendant gone wrong. Work it." She finishes, welling up with tears, and says, "I suck."
TYRA'S MOM
Yaya and Amanda are chilling in their homestay room when Tyra walks in to say hello. They grab the other girls and Tyra tells them that this week it's not going to be a one-on-one, it's going to be a two-on-one with Tyra and her mother Carolyn London.
Amanda goes first and wells up with tears as she misses her family. Tyra's mom says, "We as women want to do everything for everyone. We place ourselves last. We can't help everyone else until we help ourselves first." Yaya breaks down, wanting to be seen for who she is. "It's a hard balance, especially wanting to be a model. It's easy to get looked over as just another pretty girl but I also write really well and I do all these other things." Tyra's mom helps her out by saying, "You don't have to advertise. Your intelligence shines on its own."
Eva explains she feels like people don't get her. "I feel like I'm misunderstood. Anything I say, the intentions of it go completely sideways." Carolyn says, "The hardest thing is to look inward." Eva unloads her emotional baggage, describing how hard it is for her to be a better person, to build herself up. Tyra explains, "It's about checking it. Eva's not feeling that great about herself, it's time to throw a dagger, but that is the moment when you have to pull it back in."
Finally it's Ann's turn and she says how much it hurts that Jay said she should have gone home last week. Tyra's mom reminds her, "You're going into an industry where that's all they do--and they'll tell you to your face you're not right for the job." Tyra says, "You are still here so it's up to you." And Ann adds, "To work it."
A QUARTET BECOMES A TRIO
Tyra Mail arrives and the girls learn that the next day is when it will go from four to three. Ann is concerned she's the one going home and Eva shares her concern. She says of Ann, "I hope she has one good picture in there because I don't want to see her go."
The girls enter and meet the judges, plus special guest judges Shingo and Hitomi. Tyra tells them they will be judged on their Anime shoot and on the test that Shingo and Hitomi are going to administer. Shingo then tells them, "This week you learned about extreme street fashion. You have fifteen minutes to change and come back and show us your own personal street style."
Yaya's up first. Nolé says, "Not working for me." Tyra likes it, "You're serving it." Shingo says, "I think you look great but we weren't able to see you at the go-sees because you were late." All the other judges are shocked. Janice says, "You can't be late in Tokyo. Or Paris. Or New York." Then it's time to show Yaya's photo. Janice loves the hair and make-up. Nigel thinks Yaya is too muscular. Tyra suggests how Yaya might have sat in a different way on the bike. Janice sums it all up: "Hair and make-up 10. Body and Pose 2."
Hitomi doesn't get Amanda's outfit. Janice breaks it down and tells her to take off everything black and yellow. Once that is done, her legs revealed, she gets high praise. Amanda's photo is splashed on the wall and the judges love it. Nigel says, "You look like the perfect Barbie-anime doll." Tyra digs it, "You're selling motorcycles but you're saying, I'm fine too."
It's Ann's turn, and when she trudges forward, the judges unload on her. Janice doesn't like her skirt or her socks. Nigel tells her she looks bored. Nolé begs for something, anything. "Let me see happy. Let me see sad. Let me see sexy. You haven't changed at all." Janice loves her pose but says, "Hair and make-up is wearing you but you're not wearing it." Then she is criticized for lacking energy. Tyra tries to help her out, "Who's your favorite actress? Who's your favorite singer?" When Ann has no answer, Tyra says that maybe that's her problem: she's not drawing from any inspiration. As the assault continues, she breaks down in tears, much to Nolé's joy. "Ah, finally, emotion." Hitomi says, "Sad. Beautiful."
Eva's look doesn't work at all. They cut her shorts from knee length to short short. Then, much to all the judges' surprise Eva's photo is a letdown as well, nudging her to the brink of elimination.
THE BOILING POINT AND SAYONARA
As they wait in the holding room Ann goes after Eva again, frustrated by her performance before the panel. As Eva tries to defend herself, Ann cuts her off, repeating, "We're not having this conversation. We're not having this conversation."
Nolé loves Yaya's photo. Nigel says, "She looks like a purple bumblebee." Janice says, "Isn't that what Japanese fashion is about?" Amanda is the next to be judged by the panel. Janice says, "Amanda reeks of a model." Nigel doesn't think she necessarily has it. The judges all agree that when it comes to Ann, it's too late in the game for her to not be bringing it more. Janice feels she has shown enough growth. As for Eva, the judges don't think the photo reflects her best work but do think she shines in person.
The girls are called back in and Tyra opens by saying, "The judges feel, right now, that not one of you has what it takes to be America's Next Top Model." Amanda is the first name called and Tyra asks her to critique herself. Amanda says, "I need to work on my presence in person." Yaya is the next name and her self-critique is, "I know it's important for a Top Model to be likable, not just after warming up to her." It's down to Ann and Eva.
To Eva, Tyra says, "Anything negative about you is constantly blamed on other people. My momma was here and talked to you about this." To Ann she says, "You are not taking responsibility for you. You were the captain of that water polo team because you wanted it, you studied it." And then she says, "That's why Eva is still in the running."
Ann blows kisses at the panel then turns and hugs Amanda and Yaya--leaving Eva out in the cold. As Ann packs her bags she says, "I think she will be sad I didn't hug her but if she lets that affect our friendship then it wasn't meant to be in the first place." Through her tears, Ann talks about how terrible it was to be in front of the panel, and then drying her eyes, she says she doesn't want to cry anymore. We see her toting her bag down city streets, headed back to America.
