RuneScape | I never thought I'd see the day... February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
It's funny how art sometimes innocently reflects life, isn't it? Just got this from the RuneScape newsletter:

The bank we promised in the last newsletter has been added to the city, and is a safe place to store your money. Following a large amount of attacks just outside the bank, the city has paid to put multiple armed guards around the bank area to protect people who have just withdrawn money. The number of guards was further increased last Monday.

NeverWinter Nights | D&D Rules in CRPGs February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
Only generally related to NWN, the folks over at Game Banshee have posted a nice article on the complexities of integrating the D&D ruleset into a game.

Editorial | Myschyf: "You're all Wankers" February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
After the stunning revelation that the majority demographic for computer games is the Horny Teen-Aged Boy, Myschyf appears to be all upset over the fact that Godgames has a Shadowbane catalog with a cute girl on it.

Mys: breathe lady, just breathe. Yea, we know the male-dominated industry of computer games tends toward the objectification of women...but so does the Porn industry, lady. I don't think anyone ever denied it.

Before you go over there with a bit of steam aimed at Mys, you should make sure to remember her extraordinary powers of humor/anger writing:

Or, given the testosterone-drenched product emanating from these paragons of creativity, you haven't dated at all, since no real life woman can ever have Lara Croft's figure. Really. If they did, they'd topple over. Poor Angelina Jolie has to have support wiring and guide wires just to walk across a room. All because you pinheads can't figure out what a woman in real life actually looks like. Maybe going outside would help. Then again, that would probably result in another news story about sad-assed EQ players encountering the rest of humanity.

By: Mystery
The good folks over at Neverwinter Haven have compiled a breakdown of Trent Oster (et al) commentary in official message boards. The latest update is dated 2/6/01.

Jumpgate | Famous Last Words February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
A potentially game-balance-harming bug has been found in Jumpgate. One of the developers, in response to a notification posted in a public discussion thread, said:

This is definately a bug. Sorry guys, we thought it was fixed last patch - turns out it wasn´t. Next patch we´ll take another whack at it. - We´re feeling good about this one... nothing can *possibly* go wrong! :)

(insert impending doom/foreshadowing music here)

Ultima Online | Important Beta information February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
Prompted by discussions regarding the impending UO: 3rd Dawn beta, Cynthe (Community and Web Coordinator) had this to say in a discussion thread on the official message boards:

Actually, we aren't gearing up for anything just yet. :) Our External Testing Coordinator recently sent out some confirmation emails to those people who participated in the one-month UO Test Center beta promotion (note that bugs submitted after the promotion are always appreciated, but will not guarantee an ORIGIN beta spot). Several people have posted about these emails, leading some to believe that the application process for beta testers has opened, and that alpha must be starting very soon.

This is currently not the case. Approximately 100 people were accepted through this promotion, and those people were recently sent confirmation emails to let them know that their bugs had been recorded, and that they would be included once testing began. There has been no other application process or sign-up yet. We still have plenty of room, though, and there will be tens of thousands of spots available once the application process opens!

Star Wars Galaxies | Letter from Kevin February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
A nice letter from the community manager, Kevin O'Hara, has appeared on the official SW:G website. It pretty much outlines what his job at Sony will be...which basically boils down to making us, the fans, happy..

The Dark Age of Camelot | New Screens February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
2 New screens were added to the burgeoning screenshot library for DAoC.

Elemental Saga | GSD Q&A February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
One of those mystery titles, Elemental Saga has been a bit of an enigma ever since it was announced a few weeks ago. Nexon is no slacker in the MMORPG market, with ES making the number of functional titles for the company at 3. This is why you should take no time to wander over and read the interview with David Kennerly on Game Spy Daily.

WWII Online | Rodney Hodge Interview February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
Gamespot welcomed Rodney Hodge from Cornered Rat Software to the table yesterday, and began a pretty nice chat with him about WWII Online. Here's a sample:

RH: I would have to say that the time/distance factor was the biggest nut to crack. You have movement rates that vary from walking speed to driving speed to flying speed. Those relate to distances to combat and time to combat that have to be balanced to keep the game enjoyable and playable. You have to ensure that none of players moving at the aforementioned rates has to travel too long to get into a fight.

Check out the rest of the interview for yourself.

PlanetSide | New Screens for Feb February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
Verant has released 3 new screenshots for the benefit of the community. If you look at their screenshot gallery page, you'll notice that they are the "February Screenshots"...implying that we'll be seeing more and more as the months progress? Maybe...check out the most recent for yourselves:

Editorial | The Online Worlds Mini-Test February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
Jonric, a Vault Network correspondent, has challenged us all to come up with a list of games that include a Persistant Online World. Now, while POW and MM titles aren't exactly the same (you can have persistance, and not allow more than a certain number of people on at a time...hell BBS games in the 80s were POWs), a lot of the more recent POW titles have also qualified as Massively Multiplayer.

Take a look at his list here.

PlanetSide | New Development Diary February 07, 2001
By: Mystery
The good folks over at VDE have posted the latest installment in their Planetside Development Diary series. Here's a sample:

From the perspective of a game designer on PlanetSide, I have to admit that the prospect of full FF damage is pretty scary. There are so many issues that need to be worked out for such a system to be effectively utilized as a game play element. As a design team, we’re looking forward to implementing an FF system that minimizes the negative aspects associated with friendly fire (i.e. grief players). But the challenge is ahead of us to try something different, on a scale never before seen, and that makes it exciting all at the same time. I hope that we’re able to walk away, just like Rainbow Six, with a genre in FPS gaming, this time set against the backdrop of a massively multiplayer game.

You can see the rest of his commentary here.
