Editorial | Project X February 08, 2001
By: Mystery
Oof, my sides hurt. You can see for yourself that a group of folks over at Simultronics (the original developers for Gemstone III) have begun gathering funding for something called Project X, a Christian MMORPG. What's next, an MM title for people with Green Eyes?

Delusion got me giggling with the review on Lum the Mad for this idea. The lead in is:

Baby Jesus hits you for 43 points of soul damage. You have been saved.

Editorial | Buur makes a case February 08, 2001

Yet another instance of a naming problem in an MMORPG (remember "Hung Well"?), Xstacy is getting her name changed. Xstacy is an EQ player that has managed to hit level 59 (no small feat, considering the level 60 cap in EQ) without trouble, but the EQ people believe that Xstacy is glorifying drug use -- so there you have it. At least she doesn't have to delete her character, like Hung's problem with the Turbine folks.

You can read the article for your yourself, and then shake your head in mystification, just like me.

Editorial | Zocks on MMORPGS February 08, 2001
By: Mystery
In an interesting read, Zocks has written up an editorial comparing the features of Anarchy Online and Shadowbane. This article is originally in german, so here's the English translation. Of course, the translation software gives us gems like this:

Should here about Anarchy-Online get real competition? We hope it for all players! Into the deed, its ideas are transferred probably by means of the "Feature Characters".

You said it, brother.

Reviews | Beta Review February 08, 2001
By: Mystery
In a second of a 3 part series, the Editor for Crossroads of Rubi-Ka has posted his initial impressions of the Beta game, as he plays it:

So, I know, town is fun and all, but you want action right? I created an Atrox Soldier to test out combat with, and proceeded to find my way out of town (that was an adventure by itself :P) Combat is pretty straight forward when using a ranged weapon, pick a target, get within range, and kick back and watch the carnage. Sound and visual effects are stunning, and everything was rather the way you might expect combat wise. A few brave individuals grouped with me, and we reigned our terror on the denizens near the entrance to the city. Grouping is quite easy, and it gives you enough info about your groupmates, that I'm completely satisfied with the grouping features as they are.

You can check out the rest of Part 2, or start at the beginning with Part 1.

Anarchy Online | Another 3000 February 08, 2001
By: Mystery
Keep for your fingers crossed, everybody. From the official AO website:

We have started to send out the next batch of 3000 AO beta e-mails and CDs today. When we have gotten these people in and everything is working well, we will add at least one more batch of testers.

Warzone Online | Round, round, get around... February 08, 2001
By: Mystery
Christofer Sundberg really gets around. This time, he's talking with Yurg, over at Freelancer. Here's a sample of the dialog:

[Yurg]: Christofer, tell about weaponry. What 'hell machines' will the army be armed with and will that be possible for gamer to equip the 'models'?

[Christofer]: Weapons? You name it, we got it! You will play with everything from chains, claws and magic to revolvers, machine guns, chainsaws and flamethrowers. You cannot equip your troops though, more than with grenades and mines of different kinds. Every troop has a function in the game and when composing your force according to the mission you have chosen to play, your army will be your resources to manage. Your skill in choosing the right troop for the right mission will be essential for your success.

You can see more here.

NeverWinter Nights | Better Anytime than Never February 08, 2001

And here, after thinking that the NWN official site was never going to be updated again, the development team releases a Project Update for December and January.

WWII Online | John MacQueen Interview February 08, 2001
By: Mystery
After the cavalcade of interviews from yesterday...here's another one. This time around, John MacQueen, one of the founders of Cornered Rat Software, lets us in on the coolness that is WWII Online:

IGNPC: Tell us a bit more about the strategic aspects of World War II online, like how to capture enemy factories and cut their supply lines. How big of an effect will destroying factories have on troops on the front lines?

John MacQueen: Well, the world is set up much like reality. Cities are resource producers that supply everything. Factories modify those resources in a few potential ways. As well inter city resource traffic occurs whenever necessary, say if the neighboring city gets leveled or is building a large capital ship. In fact the building of the capital ship will require a stream of resources that will end up being supplied by many cities. These resources travel from city to city to the shipyard by train or truck and destroying them, or knocking out bridges etc. in their path has an effect.

You can check out the rest of the interview here.
