Uni Reserves come up short in Final The University Reserve side was always going to have to battle hard in the Final on Sunday as they came up against an unbeaten Mt Roskill team. The club has been lucky with numbers this year and it was great to see everyone turn out for the final. The Blues had plenty of experience in the pack with senior premiership players Mather, Brett, Henty and Jolly all putting their hand when it counted the most. The Blues also had a lot of first year players which also competed well. The Roskill team had plenty of run in them and this showed in the first half. The Blues soon got back into the match but Roskill kicked away at the end for a well deserved victory. Congratulations to Matthew Nooy who was voted Best on Ground for University. Final score Mt Roskill 7.8.50 to University 2.3.15. A huge thanks goes to Andy Nooy who has coached the side all season, Colin Tincknell who coached the Grand Final side, and Dave Harris who was the runner. University Goals: Monaghan 1, Hunter 1. University Best: Nooy, Hunter, Henty, Tincknell, Hart.

Blues show ticker to make Grand Final The Uni Blues have made it to yet another grand final, 17 in the past 22 years. On Sunday 24th November the Blues showed plenty of ticker in downing the minor premiers by 3 goals and securing another grand final berth. In a wet and windy day at Becroft Park the Blues made the most of the tough conditions and converted their limited chances. The rain kept coming and the ball was like soap before the opening hooter, which ended up being a car horn! Kicking into the wind in the first half the Blues back line shut up shop and gave the forwards enough ball to use. The old back line firm of Gilbert, Froggatt and Price, along with 1st year players Burley and Bailey ran a very tight ship and only let one slip through in the 1st quarter. The second quarter was another hard slog but the Blues soon took control and asserted themselves on the game. Experienced heads Taverna, Donoghy and the two Crowes kept the ball moving in the centre of the ground with McKay and Sharpe providing the gas on the wings. With Roskill playing with the wind in the 3rd quarter the back line had to play tight once again to allow the forwards the chance to finish the game off. The Blues kept them scoreless and went into the lead in the final term. Veterans Forsyth, Pidgeon and Goldsack controlled the forward line with Martin and Burdeu proving good service from the half forward line. Only a late goal by Roskill in the last minute dented a grand effort by the Blues, but it was a great team effort in trying conditions. The Blues look like Premiership contenders after 4 solid quarters of footy and everything is now in place for the grand final on 8th December. Uni Goals: Goldsack, Martin, Blyth, McKay Uni Best: Everyone! |
