In many ways, the McMillan family epitomised the hopes and aspirations of all emigrants. Prior to his assisted passage with his wife and children on the David Clarke in October 1839, Archibald McMillan was a penniless porter at Greenock, near Glasgow in Scotland. But he wasted no time on his arrival in Melbourne to show his enterprise. While employed as a stone- mason’s labourer, he saved enough money to buy a cow and grazed it on Crown land, tending it after his day’s work. It soon became a herd, and the sale of its milk provided the money for him to buy a 42.5 acre creek-side farm from Henry Dendy (1800-81) at the end of Kooyong Road late in 1842 at a cost of £298. McMillan’s farm is shown on the plan of Dendy’s Brighton Estate circa 1842, and was named Clonaig.
By June 1843, he was able to qualify for the £200 needed for the voting franchise of the New South Wales Legislative Council. In 1845, the farm of Jonathan Binns Were (1809-85), Henry Dendy’s manager and agent was rented out to McMillan as well. Were had ar- rived in the same year as McMillan, and apparently as part of the partnership arrangement with Dendy, Were selected for himself 78 acres between Arthur’s Seat Road (Nepean Highway), North Road and Union street, being part of the 5,120 acres comprising Dendy’s Special Survey. In April 1841, Dendy and Were Bros. & Co. advertised for surveyors to undertake a survey of Dendy’s land grant, later to become known as the Brighton Estate. Were remained a major land owner in the area, long after Dendy’s departure about 1848

Archibald McMillan died on 21 September 1863, at the age of 74 and his wife Kate survived him by 16 years. They are both buried in the family vault at the Melbourne General Cemetery. By 1847, McMillan was growing wheat and oaten hay and had become Brighton’s leading farmer. Indeed, McMillan was one of the few to make a living from the largely unsuited farming land that comprised the Dendy Estate. However, he is not mentioned in the Port Phillip Colony directory as owning freehold property in Brighton until 1849. He continued to achieve, always admiring the education that he was never able to have, but vowing that his children would have the chance that he missed. Archibald and his wife Katherine née McTaggert had ten children, and by the time of the last birth, he had become extremely wealthy, with station properties stretching from Victoria through New South Wales and up to Charleville in Queensland. The first house on the Were property was built in 1851 (or 1854) and named Landcox after their English family estate. The Were family, and later, the eldest daughter Sophia Sheppard née Were (1834-1916) early in her marriage to Sherbourne Sheppard (1820-94) lived in this seven roomed house until 1862, when the house and 42 acres of land was sold to McMillan.

John sen. & jun. McMillan; Directory 1847 farmers, Scotchman's Creek:
John Evander McMillan was baptised at Arnaboll, on the west side of Loch Hope, not far from Durness, the County of Sutherland, Scotland, the only known child of Ewan McMillan and Flory McKay. John was baptised at Durness on the 11th February, 1816.
1842 - Twenty-six years later and over ten and a half thousand miles on the other side of the world - John McMillan is now in Australia. Of his life in those intervening years, we have no knowledge. Melbourne had been previously known as Port Phillip and was still part of New South Wales. It wasn't the lure of gold that attracted John to this land, as the gold rush was yet to happen in Victoria. But when it did, John was well placed to take advantage of it, as by then he was a well established hotel keeper.
Mary Ann Hunt was baptised about 1827, give or take a few years, in Belfast, Northern Ireland - the daughter of James Hunt and Ann Welsh and one of eleven children. Her sister Margaret was a witness at her wedding 1849 to John McMillan
Early in 1845, Mary became pregnant. A son, Evander Cameron McMillan was baptised on New Year's Day, 1846. A year later, on the 7th January, 1847, Mary Anna McMillan, was born.
John and Mary married by licence on the 15th February, 1849, at the St James Church. The marriage record indicated that John was of a different parish to Mary, the meaning of this is not yet understood. It appears that he may have been living in the Parish of Ballan at this time. They both signed their names - John using the abbreviation Jno. The witnesses were 'illegible first name' Rutherford of The Avoca, and Mary's sister Margaret Hunt of Melbourne.
Several months later, from 1st July 1849, John leased the Crown Hotel from William Mortimer. He obtained the license for this in April at the Annual Licensing Day. The business was situated on the corner of Queen and Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, and included stables and bullock yards.
