John Toohy, male wed Jane Sullivan 1842 #35442 Roman Catholic St Francis, Melbourne James Toohey, a miner, travelled to Australia as a ship's carpenter on the "Mary Nixon" and arrived in Nov 1841. He had quarreled with Jane Sullivan and she had departed for Australia as a children's nurse to a family. Jane travelled to Port Phillip on the ship "Agostina" arriving on the 17th December 1841 to be met at Liardet's beach Melbourne by James. Jane is shown in the Passenger list as James Sullivan, and James' surname is wrotten as Twohy. James and Jane were married at St Francis RC church on the 10/4/1842. How family traditions mix facts - James came to Port Phillip with his cousin Patrick (actually Matthew Toohay) who was of the Holy Cross Parish County Tipperary. Patrick (actually Mathew's two sons) started the Standard Brewery (this was in Sydney in 1876), later Toohey's and wanted James to go into partnership, but he made the wrong decision and James picked the lure of the goldfields. James and Jane had nine children. | ||||||
