 | Micro-Mix Studio was first opportunity
to learn about recording, and to practice drum-set
extensively!      The years between drumming with Slate
& Pearl, and directing my RX
Band, was dotted with many small gigs with many different people and
bands, as well as many teaching jobs including Carrick
      High School, and Steel
City Ambassadors. In an attempt to break away from the teaching jobs
and to get better higher paying drumming jobs, I made the decision to live
at Micro-Mix Studio in Harrison City PA for a year, to learn more about
the music business, and to practice extensively. The building was owned by
Jeff Wilson, and the equipment belonged to Jim Wilson. (not related) They
had a promising rock band with drummer: Doug Heaps, my old friend from the
      Royal
Crusaders, who was also in residence! The place was a church,
remodeled into a music studio, with 4 apartments for the musicians, and I
lived in the freshly remodeled basement. It still had it's stained glass
windows and other reminders of it's long history. Some words to live by,
were on the 'book' in front of the former church in Harrison City, PA:
Say you want to go to New England, pack your bags and go.
Say you want to live your live in luxury, wake up it don't come free.
You say you want a bible for Sunday, you don't understand it's a seven day
      plan.
You say you want a lover to live with, to begin with find a friend.
You can get everything you want, it's up to you to bring it through.
You say you want to play the guitar, pick it up and learn to play.
You say you want to live your life in the mountains, off the fountains we
      call the land.
You can get everything you need and want, it's up to you to go out and get
      it.

First Mention in Album Credits   My first night in residence, 'Special
Ed', a band from Pittsburgh, came in to record a record album, which was the first time I'd
worked in a studio, and gotten credit on an album! I only helped a little
in setting up and working with drums. The band featured: Mark Chute
on Guitar, harmonica and vocals; Bob Loisette played Bass,
Keyboards and vocals; Shawn Malseed was drums and vocals,
and Fred Rice on Subliminal Sax. While I was at Micro-Mix
      Studio, many
albums were recorded and Jim kept the studio pretty busy, so there was a
      lot to see and learn.
First Job as a Producer   I produced my first demo at Micro Mix, working for a band called: 'Breakfast
With Bob', that featured a lead singer named: Star. It was a
one day job, doing four tunes, the band was very happy with the results,
and last I heard they pulled down a bunch of good jobs using that
      professional sounding demo.
My first Professional Demo    My first music demo was also done at the studio, and was called: 'Vince
Schaefer, Drummer/Percussionist'.  It featured samples from the Slate
& Pearl Band, a couple of drum tunes I wrote while learning to use
the Linn Drum Machine, and some other drumming snippets. It also featured
a section from a tune called: 'Igor a Musical', which was an
original 90 minute composition by Doug and myself. Heaps played his
Simmons Sevens' drum set and I played my Rogers kit, recording a brilliant
piece of music. I distributed over 150 copies of this demo tape which
eventually led directly to me playing with  RX,
      Neon
      Craze, and  Energy
      Rush!
