Here are a few things to keep in mind when thanking champion employees who bring in referrals.

  1. Periodically through out the year and especially at the annual performance evaluation, give employees constructive feedback about the positive word-of-mouth marketing behaviors they have exhibited. Be specific to reinforce the behaviors that are most desireable.

  2. When you observe strong customer service skill in action, reinforce the behavior immediately by thanking the employee in person, giving a written note of appreciation, and recognizing them among their peers.

  3. Think about developing an incentive system for referrals generated by employees in addition to your sales and marketing staff.
