The History
During this pass and alternate history, the Southern continent is almost entirely unknown. Explorers only began to set out approximately 50 turns before the pass. Lirac Hold was only officially founded about 47 turns ago, 41 turns before the pass. There are no cotholds, though there are several camps containing the most hardy of explorers though many of these are temporary and none contain families.
When thread began to fall, Lirac, the founder of the Hold and one of those who had participated in some of the first explorations, staunchly held his place about STAYING, and it quickly became apparent that they would need a small Weyr to help. As flourishing as the little fishing/farming community had been, they would be able to support a small Weyr.
Lirac Hold itself is, indeed, a very prosperous Hold with a promising future. The right leadership had gotten ahold of it. The Southern continent's soil was rich, and perfect for growing crops. A few new plants picked up demand very quickly. Fishing worked well here, and even shipfish were happy there. It's farmlands stretched far around the hold, and before thread started to fall, there had been talk of creating minor cotholds. Of course, all that stopped when thread began to fall. Since then many of the farmers left, lowering the necessity for cotholds.
Luckily, Lirac Hold was well enough off to carry itself through the first two stormy turns, and business began to pick up again. The Hold is doing well now, and is actually quite pleased with it's Weyr and even defensive of it. Sure, there are problems, but the Lirac holders are hardy people, and are able to recognize that they owe a lot to the dragonriders.
