History of Lirac Weyr
Lirac Weyr was pieced together from adventurous souls who wanted a place in the wilds of the South, many of them with the notion that dragonriders could finally be useful individuals, and some of them with the idea that the dragonriders' new occupation could be that of helping to explore. They certainly needed to find an occupation for themselves. The Red Star had not appeared the previous pass, and while all the Weyrs in Pern had been bare bones these centuries and so had found ways to usefully occupy themselves, all of a sudden they seemed to be picking up. The Holders, the dragonriders knew, wouldn't like this at all. As a matter of fact, a fair amount of dragonriders opposed so many Queen risings. There just wasn't enough to remain occupied.
So, after aiding the official founding of Lirac Hold, Travelers' Weyr was established, a bare bone Weyr meant to house traveling dragonriders temporarily aiding the exploration of Pern. It was set up with exploration not only of the continent but of new ways to house dragonriders in new environments, and possibly eventually alongside with a cothold.
Then the Red Star appeared. It was a quick scramble to fix Travelers' Weyr---then renamed to Lirac Weyr---to a fighting position. There wasn't enough time to fix the buildings, but more riders were brought in, including an older Queen pair, one expected to rise very soon.
While there were no natural cave formations to house an entire Weyr, there was one large cave that would be suitable for the Queen and the clutch she would lay and subsequent cliffs that could be made for Weyrs. They had ASSUMED Renarth would rise right away. She was due for it, after all, and the clutches had been getting to be quite large anyhow. She didn't rise right away. The stress of moving, and a strange southern illness her rider, Irela, had acquired, inhibited Renarth's flight for a turn and a half.
When Renarth did fly, she was quickly caught by a brown as she'd forgotten about him in her teasing with two bronzes also close by. The clutch was woefully small, nor was there a Queen nor any bronze eggs. When she rose the next year, she was caught by Bronze Telenth, though Renarth's age showed, and again, her clutch was small, a few of the eggs not even hatching. This was the last time she was to rise. The other Weyrs wouldn't or couldn't offer another Queen dragon, as this Pass had already claimed many inexperienced riders' lives.
What the other Weyrs DID give Lirac Weyr was the unwanted. Older riders, lazy riders, physically and mentally disabled riders, immature and unruly riders. This is what makes up the core of Lirac Weyr. Yes, a few riders, the true dragonriders of Pern who knew there was a need greater there than in their own home, stepped up and volunteered, though those that were actually permitted to come were few and far between. This makes for an interesting dynamic of wise and foolish, honest and crooked. It makes for many tales, and many losses. It made for the reputation that Lirac Weyr owned, so that this small, struggling Southern Weyr is commonly called Wayward Weyr. It's still the habit, to send to Southern the unwanted to Lirac Weyr, who accepts almost all. They must.
Now, ten turns later, a conclave of Weyrleaders and Goldriders is being called. The goldriders, knowing the reputation of this awful Weyr, are being asked to step into Wayward for a short period to test the waters in what manner they will. Will one choose to remain there and help the Weyr thrive, or will the whole place be scratched and abandoned?
The other problem?
Wayward Weyr is snickered as being the failure Weyr of Pern, simply
because of their bad luck. So candidates from other Weyrs generally
WON'T transfer in, candidates from the nearby hold are few and far
between because these holders either don't care to stand or aren't
from a line of potential dragonriders. They're just adventurous types. The clutch may be promising, but the candidate pool doesn't seem to be.
Very few Weyrs, like Fort or Telgar, are sympathetic, though they have a hard time in helping. Other Weyrs stay carefully quiet about the Southern Weyr. The majority, like Ista, believe nothing good will ever come out of Wayward Weyr.
We can state that such-and-such Weyrs are sympathetic, just unable to
help, and that other Weyrs are either unwilling to say something one
way or another, and still others think the whole Southern thing is a
bad idea completely.
Our character call is for the scandalous of Pern that
couldn't make it anywhere else, the bumbling dragonriders, or the ones
that are getting up in age. We have candidates that are here
because other Weyrs have rejected them for one reason or another. Of
course, there are the adventurous types that just want to see what
Southern's all about, as well as the few true blue
riders/candidates who think it's sickening how the rest of Pern is
treating them and has come down to help because, after all, the creed
is to protect ALL of Pern, bad luck or no.
