Pern. What is it?

Simply, it's a world created by Anne McCaffery. That means that NONE of this is my work. We are simply playing a fandom off of it, and the only things we could legitimately claim are the things not recognized from the book, such as our own characters, and much of Lirac Weyr's history.

Never read the books? Read the books ages ago, but you're a little rusty? Here's some VERY basic information about Pern, and some things Anne McCaffrey would like us to note:

Lirac Weyr is a Weyr, which means there are dragonriders. Dragonriders fight something called Thread, which is a mindless glob of silvery "thread" that eats everything carbon-based. Anything that is in the Plant or the Animal Kingdom is carbon-based. Thread is killed either by fire or water.

There are five colors of dragons. From the largest to smallest, we have:

Gold dragons - Female dragons who impress heterosexual females, these are the ones who clutch to make more dragons. The rider of a gold generally holds a lot of responsibility in the Weyr. Gold dragons usually will not shoot flame *unless for some reason we want the gold dragon to be sterile, something Lirac Weyr is not opposed to*. They only fight on the lowest wing, catching thread the upper wings missed using flame throwers.

Bronze dragons - Male dragons who impress heterosexual males. Usually, they mate with the gold dragons if they're lucky enough to catch them in a flight. Again, because of the type of personality that the riders USUALLY have (Lirac Weyr is full of exceptions), bronze riders often find themselves in positions of authority. In thread falls, bronzes can stay the entire endurance, which is another reason they are often put as leaders of wings.

Brown dragons - Male dragons. At Lirac Weyr, these will almost always impress heterosexual or bisexual males. On the RARE occasion, they will impress homosexual males or females. Large browns are able to catch golds in flights, and many browns can also endure an entire thread fall.

Blue dragons - Male dragons. The majority of blues will impress any male, though they can impress homosexual and bisexual females. Blues are quick flyers, though they don't have a large endurance.

Green dragons - Female dragons. The majority of greens will impress any female, though they can impress homosexual and bisexual males. Greens are the quickest of the dragons, making them indispensable in thread falls, though they don't have the endurance of the other colors.

There are some places that McCaffery wrote about in her original books that are off-limits for IC RP, though characters may have a background in these locations and we DO have relationship-mentions of the Weyr for the sake of continuity. These places include Ruatha Hold, Benden Weyr, and the Harpercraft Hall. Also, NONE of Anne's characters may be referenced in this RP.

Pern has no religion, magic, or fantasy creatures other than the dragons. Humans cannot bespeak dragons, though a dragon may bespeak anyone it finds worthy. **Note: But Krista IS working on a "Pern Mythology/Folklore/Slang Page" if you have any ideas, please send them along!
