Kakadu

More astonishing landscapes greeted us in Kakadu. - that is, when we could see past the smoke, as we had arrived during seasonal burnoffs.

From the air, we could identify the escarpment of Arnhem land (Rainbow Serpent Dreaming), Nourlangie Rock (site of aboriginal rockart), Gagudju Crocodile Hotel, Jabiru, and Ranger Uranium mine.

The Yellow Waters Sunrise Cruise, near Cooinda, gave the opportunity to practise bird and croc spotting skills in the peaceful serenity of Kakadu National Park.

The Jabiru is one of the many birds we located on this cruise. Others included egrets, kingfishers, brolgas, kites, (including one who stole a fish from  an egret & put on an interesting attack) and many migratory birds. All were wary of the ever lurking crocodiles, as well as our visit to their territories.

We found many examples of Aboriginal rock art at Nourlangie Rock - there are many more sites around, as wwell as a great display of the area's cultural history at the new (in 1995) Culture Centre, Cooinda. Cooinda Lodge provided great accommodation, too.

From there, we took a commercial flight to Alice Springs and on to Ayers Rock.
