OFF SEASON FUN AND FITNESS

Recently, my foot started to hurt as a result of too much running in preparation for the Martindale Triathlon in October. I needed to stay off of it to let it heal, but was loathe to give up my hard earned fitness level, so I looked to my bicycle for some cross training. I've always hated cycling because I'm just frankly not any damn good at it, and can find more excuses to blow off a ride than you can shake a stick at. A big part of the problem has always been that I hate to ride alone. But, I figured this was my best option and that it would probably improve my leg turnover rate, as I hadn't done much speed work before my foot started to hurt.

Before I made my first ride, I mentioned to Jerry Cochran that I was going to start, no matter how much I hated the idea. He said how he was wanting to do something beside just running as part of his effort to lose some post Safari weight and that he would join me on some rides. I really hadn't done any riding with anyone besides in some of the biathlons I'd done, and found out how much more tolerable riding was for me when there was someone else there suffering along with me.

Jerry has since decided that he will do the bike leg of the triathlon (hope I'm not giving away any secrets), and so we have continued riding, sometimes 2-3 times a week. It's actually become almost enjoyable, especially when we finally stop, and load up the bikes to go home.

We were talking after our ride last weekend, about how we'd like to continue riding even after the triathlon, to try to avoid putting on the usual extra weight during the off season. He suggested that I write something for the newsletter, so this is it.

We want to continue riding, but we think (and hope) that some of you might want to join us, so this just to let you all know. This is something that we would like to keep fun and social, with the competitive aspects of it kept to a minimum, unless you are slower than I am, an idea I would find hard to believe.

At this point, we have no ideas how this would best be arranged, and are open to suggestions on all aspects of it, assuming there are even any others out there who would like to join us. If you have some ideas, or are interested in this at all, Call Jerry or myself, and we'll try to work something out.

On a related note, we have been playing dominoes (42, Moon, and Straight) fairly regularly and would probably be willing to try to combine the rides with some 'rock throwing'. If any of this appeals to you, let us know.

Johnny Prochaska
