1997 Trinity River
Challenge Results Elm Fork, Trinity 11.8 miles September 13, 1997 The Second Trinity River Challenge was a fine
production of the Dallas Downriver Club who organized and
supported the race, provided safety officials, provided
shuttles for the racers, a raffle of lots of nifty
canoeing gear and a spectacular home cooked barbeque at
the finish line. Many thanks to Rich Manning and the DDRC
for reviving canoe racing in DFW region. The Upper Elm Fork course which proved ideal for USCA
as well as unlimited and recreational boats. The course
had current and enough shallow water, turns and obstacles
to keep things interesting without tearing up the USCA
boats. The race was easily won by Roger and Freddy in an
Olympic K-2 overcoming a broken rudder cable at the
start. The four man boat of Prochaska X 2, Bain and
Steppe gamely came in second. Surprise entry Ben Kvanli who competed in slalom K-1
at the 1996 Olympic Games was third in his first race in
a sprint Olympic K-1. Fast improving David Reichel kept
things interesting in a K-1. Bob Spain was the fastest on
the LeMans start and led the USCA field with Youens and
Deviney closing fast in a C-2. 1 Myers, Roger/ Mynar, Fred Martindale, Unlimited Male
