UN Security Council Resolution 1312 (2000) -- Establishment of the UN observer mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea (Authorization of 100 military observers); July 31, 2000

ERITREA GETS A STERN WARNING: - August 11 - Ethiopia today issued a strong statement warning Eritrea to stop abusing Ethiopian civilians remaining in Eritrea or face the consequences. Link to spokesperson site: PLAYING A DANGEROUS GAME
"Ethiopia wishes to make it clear that the Eritrean regime should consider itself warned that continuing to pursue its cruel policies of incarceration and mass expulsion through minefields of Ethiopian citizens, will have grave consequences for which the Eritrean authorities will be held responsible."
Comment: Ethiopia has a very strong bargaining postion achieved by the military defeat of Eritrea. Ethiopia should have used this position to secure its interests before signing the ceasefire agreement. (Example - In addition to protection of civilians, Ethiopia could have insisted on the immediate return/compensation for goods looted by Eritrea at Assab and Massawa. Instead, Ethiopia has agreed to let a compensation commission deal with the issue; this effectively means the looted goods are gone forever).

A CALL TO THE DIASPORA: Listen to Sheikh Alamoudi (Aend Ethiopia Radio). It is a sincere call for each and every Ethiopian to do just a little bit to fight the effects of drought. "Help Your Country!" "Stand for Your Country!" ...a must listen radio interview where Sheikh Alamoudi explains his view on patriotic duty and also stresses the key role of education for Ethiopia's future.

ANALYSIS: Reflections On The Political And Legal Alternatives For The Restoration Of Ethiopia's Legitimate Rights To The Assab Region
- By Teodros Brehan, July 30, 2000

The Future of Postwar Eritrea: At the end of the second world war, numerous territorial adjustments took place. These actions penalized the Axis powers (including Italy). The case of Eritrea was one of these postwar territorial questions. Although the ultimate decision was for a federation, the historical records make it clear that if the decision was for Eritrean independence, then the international community would have conditioned this on the immediate and complete union of the Afar coastline with Ethiopia. For example, the influential Brigadier Longrigg, administrator of Eritrea from 1942-44, and author of a book History of Eritrea, wrote in African Affairs:
"Let us agree that this Eritrean boundary [parallel to the Afar coast] should disappear and Ethiopia open its arms to all the Danakils; and with them gain 400 miles of Red Sea coast and the port of Assab - a port already connected ...to the heart of Ethiopia. ...We have then agreed to hand the Danakil coast and the port of Assab to the Emperor immediately."

ATTENTION GETE WAMI DOUBTERS: Gete Wami nearly set a new world record in the 5K (14:30:88) Running at a non-Grand prix track meet in Heusden, Belgium (Aug 6), she came within three seconds of the time set by the chinese Jiang Bo in 1997. In the 10,000 meters, Berhane Adere won in the fastest time of the year so far (30:51:30).
