Martial arts expert Genma Saotome takes his 16 year old son Ranma to China on a training expedition to the legendary training ground named Jusenkyō. But what they don't know is that Jusenkyō is cursed. Anyone who falls into one of the many springs in the area will take on the body of whoever or whatever drowned there last. Both Genma and Ranma suffer a little accident. Genma falls into Shonmao-ni-chuan (the Spring of Drowned Panda) while Ranma falls into Nyan-ni-chaun (the Spring of Drowned Girl). They emerge from the springs in the bodies of a giant panda and a pretty young girl. Later they discover that if they splash themselves with hot water, they get their real bodies back. But this cure is only temporary, if they get splashed with cold water they change back into the panda and the young girl. After returning to Japan they make a visit to Genma's old friend Sōun Tendō. Genma and Sōun have decided that Ranma should marry the youngest of Sōun's three daughters, 16 year old Akane. Both Ranma and Akane are shocked to learn about this arranged engagement (nobody asked them). And Akane is even more shocked to learn that her new fiancé is a girl part of the time! Right from the beginning they argue and argue and argue.... But both begin to like each other far more then either one is willing to admit.
