Sprucing up the First Floor

Here's how things looked when I got started. Most of what this page covers is sprucing up the first floor by adding trim piece and other interesting features. It makes quite a difference. It gives the house some real character.

Here's the parts that really makes the porch stand out. All the "junk" on the porch roof is acting as weights to keep things in place as the glue dries.

Here's what it looks like once they're on.

The woodwork at the top of each post are simple to put on yet changes the look of the bay windows and porch posts nicely. It's a nice feature.

The internal stairs didn't start well. These pieces aren't free standing in the least. I'm guessing good design was passed over to get these parts to fit between other pieces in the plywood sheets. I added the large wood post just to help support the stairs as they went together. I also put much of it together before fitting it into place.

Now that it's partially assembled I gave it a good stain and glued it into place. Because it wasn't put together in place, the one post didn't quite touch the floor. That's a problem I knew could happen, but I didn't want to fight getting it together in the close environment of the dollhouse. It was easy to fix with a small stained shim.

Once the glue dried, the top rungs went in nicely. Putting tiny dowels in the pre-drilled holes and adding a little trim quickly makes the hand railing. These were hard pieces to cut without splitting the wood: the pieces are small and the angles very sharp.
