What you should know before performing public ritual.

Being a Wiccan Law Enforcement student makes for some interesting searches throught the criminal statutes books.

Wicca is a constitutionally protected, legally recognized religion here in the United states. It became recognized in 1985, so no one is doing anything illeagal by claiming to be a Witch.

A word on knives:


The word? (actually several words) Never ever in a public place, they tend to frown on that. However, If possession is 9/10 of the law, Intent is the other 1/10, so if you think you can convince average Joe Cop-from-the-street that you really, REALLY weren't gonna use it illegally, be my guest. Besides who wants all that icky negative enrgy in thier Athame? My oppinion, if you hold Ritual in a public place like a park, use a wand, they work just as good and can't get you in near as much trouble.

Ok, I understand some people enjoy a little drink with thier esbats and sabats, but please, I beg of you; use common sense! Don't get plasterd and do idiotic things. Part of what makes people look down on us is this supposed "drug culture" that surrounds us. Misinformed people are often of the belief that members of Wicca get into it because of the drugs, well there are no "drugs" in Wicca that you can't get as a Christain or whatever. And you can still get busted for them, so don't even try to pull that defense. With that said, I can move on.

What to do if you get *caught*

First things first, don't panic, you are not doing anything against the law (unless you're weilding a sword, then you might have a problem). Let the police go through your things, after all you can always cleanse them again later. Explain what you are doing and why you are there CALMLY, don't yell or give an attitude, an angry cop can 'find' things to get you for. Above all, show respect. Most police officers will be suprised if you show common human decency, something they're not at all used to.
