An odd debate
As though we didnt have enough to worry about, some members of this Pagan religion cant decide what it is best to call themselves. Wiccan or Witch? Well not every Witch is Wiccan and not every Wiccan is a witch, in the raw sense of the words' definitions.
I can recall an incident (only one??) in a Sociology class where the insrtuctor, who is Islamic asked all the non-Christians in the room to raise thier hands. The two of us stood alone. Easy enough, he explained himself and everyone was cool with it. It was then my turn. "And what about you?" I can still remember his thickly accented voice. I sat up proudly "I'm a Wiccan." this resulted in strange looks and one or two curious whispers of "huh?" Begrudgeingly, I gathered my strength and said "In layman's terms, I'm a Witch." The woman in front of me proceded to scoot her desk to the other side of the room, while others looked disgusted. So I spent the remainder of the class time (40 agonizeing minites) trying to explain myself. Those who got it, got it and those who didn't, well I'll go on. The one who scooted her desk away kept asking me what I thought about Jesus and was he my savior and all that. Mostly people just wanted the basics. I could have left it at Wiccan and never been troubled, but I looked at it as an opportunity to educate the public.
What one calls one's self is entirely up to that person. One word people dont understand and the other often recives a radically negative reaction. The choice, as it often is in any form of Paganism, is entirely yours. Just dont be suprised if people back up 20 feet when you tell them you're a Witch
