Probably one of the most recognized tools of a Witch, outside the ones "in the know" is the Wand. The Wand is symbolic of Air and is used in ritual and healing to direct energy. Usually crafted by the Witch personally, it can be made out of any wood from local trees, although there are those who prefer Oak or Willow for the job. I have seen some very elaborate wooden wands with stones and feathers used as decoration and power generation. The store-bought Wand is usually made of metal such as tin or silver with the stones and other decorations souldered neatly (and quite permanantly) in place.
Annother well-known tool of Witches is the Athame or Ritual knife. This symbolizes Fire and is used much like the Wand in it Directs energy. The Athame is often used when Casting a Circle or calling Quarters. An Athame is usually a relatively dull, double-edged knife with a wooden or bone handle. Again, personal taste plays a large role; my original Athame was solid brass with leather wrapped around the handle, as the oil from my hands tended to tarnish the metal quickly. Many Witches prefer to have a black handle on their athame, but anything that works for you is what you will need. I once saw a blown glass Athame, and BOY-O-LA was it ever beutiful!
The Staff is one of the more obscure tools of Wicca. Not too many people have one, or are willing to haul it from place to place if they do. I, personally, have two. One is small and compact, it easily fits in my car and goes where I want when I want. The other, however stands a great deal taller than I and would most likely make it nescacary to unzip the back window of my Tracker to take it anywhere. A Staff is a symbol of Earth. It is annother tool used in directing energy. However, it would be kind of tough to use in healings with all the little thingies that are often hanging from them. The Staff is mainly used in casting a circle. All that is needed in crafting a Staff is a long, strong sitck and a heafty imagination. I have seen some gorgeous Staffs, some with stones souldered on them (if you figure this out please let me know how to do it!), Others with ribbons and bells and a few with some combination of the above.
