Chapter 48:LaborPat

Labor is a word. Combined with the word Pat, it becomes LaborPat, which
stands for Labor Patrol, which means that the people patrolling are actually
working. This is very complex, needless to say, a special division of the Tokyo
Metropolitan Police was created to deal with crimes involving very large robots.
They were the Special Unit of Vehicles, Section 2 or SU2.
A red robot, resembling a human in appearance, but as tall as a two story building raced down the street. Behind it, sirens blaring came several patrol cars, and a large robot painted white.
"Surrender now or we will be forced to use force!" the pilot Serena Tsukino said. "That was a terrible line!"
"Never mind that Serena! Just stop that thing!" her partner Darrien said from the car he was following her in.
"Right," Serena said. Her white robot had a tiara shaped piece around it's head. She reached up and picked it off the robot's head and flung it through the air. It missed the robot and slammed into a building.
"Dang it," Serena said.
"Serena! You missed!" Darrien shouted.
"I can see that!" Serena said.
"Well keep following it!" Darrien shouted.
The LaborPat kept up it's pursuit. The red robot rounded a corner, only to stop suddenly. There in front of it was another white robot, with a blue visor across it's face. In it's right arm it held a large sword.
"Hah hah!" it's pilot shouted and raced towards the red robot. The red bot abruptly turned around and ran back the way it came smashing into Serena's robot as it turned the corner. The two crashed to the ground in a heap. The second LaborPat swung his sword down and began hacking the red robot to pieces.
"Die you fool!" it's pilot shouted.
"Patterson! Stop that!" his partner, Mike said from his control car.
"I will not!" Patterson yelled madly and kept chopping.
"That's enough Patterson," came another voice.
"Why?" Patterson shouted.
"Because the pilot has already exited the robot and surrendered to us," the voice replied.
"Oh...I see," Patterson replied calmly.
The voice belonged to Captain Rick Furjimori, the commander of the SU2's second unit which was what Patterson and Serena belonged to. Rick was standing beside his own car and glancing at the two robots lying on the ground.
"Another brilliant operation," muttered a female voice from behind him. He turned to see Captain Lita Nelson of the SU2's first unit standing there.
"Oh..Captain Nelson, I wouldn't complain. The job got done," Rick said.
"In your usual style Rick, looks like the Chief is going to have more work tonight," Lita said.
"That's his job isn't it?" Rick replied.
Another car rolled up and out from it came the SU2-unit 2's second in command, Lt. Mina Deveraux.
"What happened?" She shouted.
"Apparently we missed all the fun," Sergeant Raye Hino muttered emerging from
the other side of the car.
"Patterson! When are you going to learn to control yourself!" Mina shouted as the group stood at attention in front of her.
"I was only doing my job," Patterson replied.
"Oh, were you?" Mina said. "And what about you Serena! Look at this bill for that building you damaged. I thought you had practiced throwing that tiara!"
"Uh...well..I had....he just moved too quickly," Serena replied.
"That's hardly an excuse," Mina said.
"Actually it is," Rick said.
"Sir," Mina said and snapped to attention.
"These red robots we've been encountering are very fast, in fact this is the best we've done against one," Rick said. "Darrien, your father owns the major robot supplier? Do they make a model like this?"
"The body design is the same as a 88-special sir, but those can't go that fast," Darrien said.
"Hmm....so someone's modifying them," Raye said leaning against the wall.
"Those bloody...." Patterson began.
"Patterson!" the room shouted before he managed to swear.
"Jerks," Patterson finished.
"This will require some investigative work then," Darrien said "Where's Steve?"
"Still, out in the greenhouse sir," Mike said.
"He's always out there, what does he do out there?" Patterson muttered.
"Well...he really doesn't do anything around here, so what else would he do?" Serena asked.
"That's true, in fact, I don't know why we hired him in the first place, oh well...I like him we can't fire him," Rick said. "Anyway....Leslie, you go get him, I want you, Deveraux, and Hino to look into this. Darrien, I want you to investigate too, try and find out through your company contacts if anything is going on," Rick said.
"And what am I going to do?" Patterson asked.
"You're going to remain on standby, Serena too. In fact, Serena, you can practice your tiara throwing while your at it once the Chief gets your robot back up and running," Rick said.
"Yes sir," Serena said.
"Dismissed," Rick said.
"They brought me another trashed LaborPat," the Chief of maintenance, Amy Anderson muttered looking at the wreckage of Serena's LaborPat.
"Yeah..when will they learn," her assistant, Greg said.
"They never learn," Amy snapped. "Well...Greg...let's get to work on this thing."
"Right boss," Greg said hurriedly.
"You actually are having them investigate something?" Lita said and began to laugh in the office she shared with Rick.
"Yes, its' a good experience," Rick said.
Lita kept laughing.
"What's so funny?" Rick asked.
"Your whole unit is a living joke," Lita said.
"Um..need I remind you that your unit doesn't have it's own show," Rick said.
Lita stopped laughing.
"Aw...nuts...but I'm in yours a lot," she said and began laughing more.
Rick just sat down in annoyance.
And that was the group.
Tsukino Serena, the pilot of unit one, she absolutely adored her robot, and had named it uh..."Jim-Boy" Apparently though the robot was female, but that's only what Greg said one night after a little too much Sake. Anyway, she was fully devoted to her work, even if she wasn't that good at it. Heck, the entire unit was filled with a group of misfits and rejects, but they put a lot of effort into her work.
Shields Darrien. Serena's partner. He was responsible for what Serena did with her robot. During a battle he was always watching her back to try and do what he could to keep her from messing up. His efforts rarely paid off. He was also the son of the president of Robot's International, though they hadn't spoken in twelve years because of a dispute over something he didn't like to talk about.
Fujirmori Rick, was the Captain of their unit. His lacksadasical manner surprised the people who he worked with, many people said he was just acting that way to hide his intelligence from others, and that instead he was a cold calculating individual, the truth was, that was smart, but that he really didn't care either. His supposed "brainstorms" came about when he actually sat down and throught about a problem, which wasn't very often.
Nelson Lita, the head of the first unit. She was always hanging around Rick because her unit never got called out to do anything. The second unit had the better robots, anyway, Rick does have a bit of a crush on her, and she exploits it to get in on all the second unit's action. She's not an evil person, she just consider the unit a living version of a sit-com and doesn't want to miss an episode so to speak.
Deveraux Mina. The second in command who has a very short temper. She actually thought she was on the fast track to promotion until she landed here. Now she's just plain bitter.
Hino Raye. A half Japanese, half New Jersian police officer who spent most of her time working for the New York police department. An opportunity opened up for her to work in Tokyo and she took it, mainly because New York smelled. Anyway, she is cold and calculating every second she's awake and thus very useful to Rick. She does most of the thinking around the SU2.
Patterson D.V. A crackpot weapons nut who likes to blow stuff up. Nuff said.
Leslie Mike. Patterson's partner and a perenial nervous wreck. He's the only member of the group with a wife. Which is good, because none of the girls in the unit would have the slightest interest in him.
Carlin Steve. A big guy who spends most of his day in a green house growing plants. No one really knows what he's supposed to be doing anyway. It's just strange.
Anderson Amy. The maintenance chief of the SU2 unit 2. She has over thirty years experience..ahem....somehow...anyway..she loves working with the robots, but hates the fact that every time they go out, one, or both of them come back totaled. Most of the time it's Patterson's that's destroyed.
Thomson Greg. The excitable, but smart assistant to Amy. He has more of a
sense of a humor about the massive damage to each robot, and he takes it all in
stride, but Amy doesn't exactly approve of it. In his spare time, Greg designs
underground operating systems for home computers. And these actually work too.
"An 88 special you say?" the chief engineer of Shields robotics, Melvin Oglethorpe said.
"Yes," Darrien said.
"Hmm...well...the truth is that one can be souped pretty easily, but that it costs money to do it. I mean....the robots were mainly designed to haul things, still...I guess with the right parts..."
"What kind of parts?" Darrien asked.
"A couple of spark plugs, some shocks, and a dyhard battery."
"What do you mean that's expensive?"
"Oh I forgot to mention the spark plugs are special. In fact there were only ten made."
"Well where are they?"
"Um...we sold them to some guy....oh yeah, he was named, Lord Evil."
"His name was Lord Evil?"
"Yeah...we thought nothing of it. Anyway, he must have those spark plugs."
"His name is Lord Evil!" Darrien said in shock.
"Yeah, so?" Melvin asked.
"Oh...boy," Darrien muttered.
"Sure...a couple of guys came in here and asked for some shocks for robots....I told them that we didn't have any...after all....we are an ice cream store," The man said.
"I see," Mike said and wrote it down.
Mina and Raye rolled their eyes towards each other and then back.
"Um..do you have any idea where they went?" Mina asked.
"Yeah, sure, to that auto place across the street," the guy said.
"Good," Mina said.
"But it was closed," The guy said.
"So where'd they go after that?" Mina muttered.
"That's when they were hit by the truck and killed," the guy said.
"You idiot!" Mina shouted and smacked him with the back of her hand.
"Hmm...she's mad again," Raye muttered.
"It is her constant state of existence," Mike said.
"Come on!" Mina said and stormed out.
"Okay, I think I'm onto something," Darrien said over the phone.
"Really?" Rick asked.
"Yes..I've traced the spark plugs to a guy named Lord Evil. He owns an amusement park outside of the city."
"He does...what's it called?" Rick asked.
"Evil land of course."
"Oh..I see," Rick said. "Do you suspect that's where the robots are."
"I'd bet on it sir."
"I'll have the others meet you there...we'll sneak the robots to a nearby location and then move from there. I'll be there as soon as I can," Rick said.
"Okay...I'll see you in about seven hours then right sir?"
"Um....right," Rick said.
Later.
"We'll feint a frontal attack and then sweep in from the north!" Patterson shouted.
"Patterson you imbecile! We don't have an evidence yet, and besides, that's an amusement park!" Mina shouted.
"Um...well...I....don't care! Just give me a gun!" Patterson shouted back.
"Ehh...I suggest that some of us go in and check the place out then we'll report back," Darrien said.
"A good idea," Raye said.
"Fine, do that," Mina said. "Mike, and Darrien, you and Hino go in. That'll keep the robots ready out here."
"This'll be fun," Mike said.
Soon the three were walking into the amusement park.
"Nice place," Mike muttered. All around them were various rides.
"The...hope you don't die of a heart attack while on this roller coaster?" Darrien asked.
"Hmm..colorful," Raye muttered.
"So..where do we start our search?" Mike asked.
A massive red robot walked by them holding balloons.
"What the..." the three said.
"Don't be surprised by the robots, they handle all the work around the park," one of the vendors said.
"Oh....I see.." Mike said and the three noticed that there were actually twelve robots in plain view.
"Um...I think we have our evidence," Raye said and pulled out a cellular phone. Literally fifteen seconds later, Patterson's LaborPat smashed through the front gate of the park and opened fire, blowing several of the robots to the ground. Serena's Laborpat followed, but tripped on a banner and crashed to the ground.
"Typical Serena. Always tripping," Raye muttered. Patterson meanwhile had
managed to blow up the rest of the robots, but...at the cost of destroying the
rest of the rides and sending thousands of people screaming in panic.
"Lieutenant Deveraux...would you care to read the damage report?" Rick muttered.
"Sir!" Mina said and pulled out a list. "Twelve work labors destroyed, fourteen million dollars in damage, and twelve injuries...."
"And....you weren't even at the right amusement park," she added.
"What?" the rest of the officers said.
"You attacked Evilworld, which is run by the Reverend Evil, the revered holy man," Rick said.
"But they were right next to each other!" Darrien shouted.
"Oh...this stinks," Serena said.
"So what? I still kicked butt!" Patterson shouted and then in excitement jumped out the second story window. Mike rushed to the window and looked out.
"Patterson? You all right?"
"Fine," Patterson muttered standing up off the pavement and walking off.
"Fortunately, my first unit of LaborPats succeeded in successfully stopping the criminal robots," Lita said smugly
"You'll notice though that we didn't see that...hmm...that's right...you don't have your own..." Rick said.
"Shut up!" Lita said
