My Napptural Journey
Previous Day's Entry
October 1, 2003
I updated my website today and was looking at the dates of the latest pics. I have celebrated my 3 month napptural annivesary. September 17th. I look forward to my year mark. As far as styles go, I am alternating between two strand twists, a twist out and the afro puff. Going natural is the best thing I could have done for my hair. Excuse me for a moment, but I am tooting my own horn. My natural hair is beautiful.

October 4th marked the year anniversary of my last relaxer. After all those years of perming my hair without knowing why. I'm happy to be able to say I've awaken from that stage in my life where I question learned behavior. I have studied straightening process including relaxing, texturizers (a relaxer in disguise), and the pressing comb. None of the tools appeal to me. I heard someone say "if you can't put it on your face, don't put it on your hair". That's makes sense to me. I wasn't a person who had to have straight hair. I was a person who believed that relaxing or perming is what I had to do my hair, just like brushing my teeth everday. Now I know better.

Did you know that a perm contains chemicals strong enough to clean soap scum from a tub? Imagine what it does to your hair and scalp. As far as the pressing comb, just think about it. You put a metal comb on a heated stove and then comb it through your hair. I don't which sounds more appealing, a chemical burn from a relaxer or a burn from a pressing comb. I say I can do without either. I am letting my hair do what it wants to do. It is happy being kinky and coily.  I want to add one more section to mysite. A frequent questions page with reference links.

Yesterday I trimmed my hair. I know I said I would not pick the scissors up for a while, but it's been over 3 months since my
"big chop" and I was experiencing knots. They say that's a sign of needing my ends cut. I put my hair in big two strand twists and cut somewhere between a quarter of an inch to half an inch.

I did some dry twists for the first time. I did a conditioner wash that morning and wore a puff. I decided to twist last night and didn't feel like rinsing out. I just grabbed and twisted (my usual method) except I didn't section my hair in four sections as normal.

I was low on my Jamaican Loc Creme Wax so I decided to make up something. I took my
Proclaim Aloe Styling Gel (about 4 tablespoons), Shea Butter Lotion (a few squeezes from the bottle), and some Extra Virgin Olive Oil (didn't really measured just poured some in) then I stirred it until it was turned a creamy consistency. I still have shiny twists and this doesn't have the beeswax in it. I may have found my alternative for my twists.

Just a note: The extra virgin olive oil came from the grocery store. I've been using it on my daughter's hair. Her hair really responds to it.

I'm beginning to think of winter and if I will need to change my routine. Right now I conditioner wash 2 to 3 times a week and mist with water and my Daily Doctor the other days. Maybe I'll cut the conditioner wash to 1 to 2 times a week. I guess I'll see.

I rolled the twists the next night on perm rod rollers. I liked the results and wore a trouser head band to pull it back.
