| What are our tournaments like? The best way to describe our Martial Arts tournaments is that they are a family reunion. Tournaments will include three events, each will be scored seperately: Forms Demonstrations Sparring The cumulative scores from all three events will determine the ranking within each group. Participants will be put into groups based upon rank and age. The size of the group varies upon how many participate, but in the past the usual number is anywhere from three to six people. Blackbelts will have their seperate tournament usually at the end. When and where do they take place? Each tournament is at a different place. Every year, some of us participate in Grandmaster Ahn's Classic Tae Kwon Do Tournament. Before every tournament, there will be announcements all the time and everywhere, so you'll know when we know. |
| What materials do you need? The basics, which is detailed on this page [here]. It's best to bring your own equipment. However, f you don't own something, fellow classmates will lend them to you as it would be in a family. But you will need to have your own mouthguard and breaking materials since these cannot be shared and the instructor cannot know which break you are planning to do beforehand to supply them. But you may be in luck--some of these basic materials may be sold during the tournament as well. At our own school tournaments, there will be lunch served by the Tae Kwon Do families, so it is wonderful to bring some money in cause you would like a delicious sandwich, croissant, hot dog, brownie, cofee cake, candy, and so on! Do I need to sign up in advance? Before every tournament, there will be a sign up sheet for those participating asking information. Our school tournaments will have a minimum fee that will cover breaking materials and trophies. We do no make a profit from tournaments. Speaking of signing up, please do so for this upcoming regional tournament that will take place on the 22nd of January 2005!! It will take place at Cincinnati Christian Schools at 11:00 AM. Competitors will be placed in groups of four. The entry fee is $30.00 and should be turned in or mailed to Mr. Tim Fiedeldey by the 15nd of January, 2005. Forms can be obtained from your instructor. Tournament Rules: Forms Competitors should know their forms. Scoring is based on balance, grace, timing, power/realism, and spirit! Demonstration Demonstrations can consist of breaking, one-steps, three-steps, Judo, Hap Ki Do, or for White Belt competition, basic blocking and kicking techniques. Normally, the demonstration should take no more than two minutes per competitor. Therefore, if the competitor chooses to perform one-steps, three-steps, Judo, or Hap Ki Do techniques, the number of techniques should be limited. This time limit will be strictly enforced. Breaking demonstrations should be pre-planned. If at all possible, competitors should have holders ready to begin when his or her name is called. Please keep in mind that set up time counts toward the two minute limit. Free sparring Matches will be one round of two minutes. Sparring will be stopped to award points. The winner will be the first person to score five points, or the person with more points at the end of the match. A tie or no score at the end of the match will result in a one-minute, sudden-death round. If no score results, the match will be decided by the Referee and Judges. One point will be awarded for a controlled hand or foot technique to the mid-section. Two points will be awared for a controlled foot technique to the facial area. Two warnings may result in the loss of a point. For Black Belt competition only, one point will be awarded for a controlled hand technique to the head while approved gloves are worn. Causes for Disqualification 1. Disobeying the Referee 2. Drawing blood or causing injury 3. Unsportsman-like conduct 4. Continued excessive contact 5. Uncontrolled technique and/or "flailing" Causes for Warnings 1. Holding 2. Stepping out of the ring intentionally 3. Attacking a fallen opponent 4. | Why bother participating? It is a great opportunity to test yourself and your skills against your comrades. Participation is meant to foster learning, kinship, and fun! The outcome is not as important as the competition itself. Competitors and spectators should not place too much emphasis on winning. Even if you are just starting out as a white belt, we love and encourage you to participate! |
