Jagannath (M)
Jagannath, meaning 'The Lord of the Universe', is an avatar of Vishnu. The history of Jagannath is lost in antiquity and mixed with innumerable myths. From being an Adivasi deity of the Gonds to an appendage of the hindu pantheon is a long journey, philosophically and otherwise. The modern day evidence of this god is the Rath Yatra - the main event of the Car Festival of Puri and the word juggernaut in the English lexicon, meaning unrelenting remorseless force, was coined by the british ignoramuscenti, who were overawed by the un-comprehending progress of the rath over bodies of devotees who accidentally fell across the path of its wheels.
