the mothers of invention and lots of others

through his web-site joey.daisey.com guitarist joey hanson offeres
his version of four frank zappa compositions: 'the black page', 'what's new
in baltimore', 'inca roads' and 'moggio'. haven't heard it yet. * * * *
belgian duo willy geets & karel 'charel' huet perform as tegennenoam.
besides own work and covers of dylan, gainsbourg and lou reed they also play
a version of frank zappa's 'in france', sung in a belgian dialect. A couple
of Saturdays ago, 2001/12/16, I saw them performing twice at the
stripgidsdagen comic book festival. Both performances (= the afternoon as
well as the evening concert) included frank zappa's 'in france' and featured
special guest mike kidson (muffin men, grien,...) on saxophone. It made my
day. * * * * world music band brathanki from poland, performded frank
zappa's 'let's make the water turn black' in concert at the 2001/10/20 "prix
europa" award ceremony in potsdam, berlin, germany. this "prix europe" is
an international radio thing; the concert was broadcasted live across europe
by 20 stations in 15 countries (including the vatican !!) - did anyone catch
this of does anyone have an audio copy of this? (thanx for the info,
zjakki) * * * * and last but not least, there's a magic band reunion being
scheduled. check teejo's web-site for the latest data.
* men & volts: rhythms & blues
(1982, ep, usa, eat eatum ep 010)
* men & volts: *hootersville (1)
(1983, lp, usa, eat 015)
in 1979, phil kaplan, jon proudman and brian frank wanted to put together a
beefheart tribute band. by the fall of 1979 the first line-up of men &
volts was finalized: phil kaplan on guitar and vocals, david greenberger on
bass, jon proudman on drums, roger stevenson on vocals & various, tom hall
on sax, and greg fromohoio on marimba. after a couple of gigs they were
told that they had to perform original material. cover bands weren't
booked. the hardcore membership (phil, david, jon & roger) decided to keep
the name men & volts, wrote material, rehearsed and began playing out again
in early 1981. Spring 1982, their first ep "rhythms & blues" got released.
One year later, their debut album "*hootersville" followed. Both these
releases sound great: angular rhythms; unpredictable and yet sounding very
familiar. The captain and his magic band are never far away, including the
free jazz saxophone solo. Twenty years later, these recordings still sound
fresh and innovating. Add them to your want-list.
* sheik yerbouti: confetti music (3)
(2001, cd, ger, goodlife records lc 02968) - incl.various frank zappa
compositions
is it possible that I haven't told you about this one? Last year, german
zappa coverband sheik yerbouti released their third album! it was recorded
live on several occasions and sounds superb (think eighty-eight band).
There's also a limited edition (of 100 copies) that includes an extra cdr,
making it a double album. check the sheik yerbouti web-site for this one.
* sandy dillon & hector zazou: 12 (las vegas is cursed)
(2000, cd, ger, crammed discs cram 097) - incl. 'her eyes are a blue
millon miles' (van vliet)
sandy dillon her vocal influences have been linked to beefheart and tom
waits before. Her teaming up with hector zazou could only make things more
interesting. "12 (las vegas is cursed)" totally meets what I expected it to
be. The enclosed van vliet composition is given a nice transformation:
sandy dillon whispers it against some sort of contemporary club/dub/backing.
I like it.
* brathanki: patataj
(2001, cd, poland, sony) - incl. 'let's make the water turn black' (frank
zappa)
in addition to what I said in the intro: the latest album by brathanki
includes zappa's 'let's make the water turn black'. Haven't heard or seen
it yet, but I thought you lot should know.
talk again to you next week,
