ESPN's Global Football League

Week 4

Previews - Saturday, September 20th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo Travelers owner

Second bye week on the NFL brings more drama and coaching demands for the owners in Global Football League. Week 4 will feature three non-divisional and only two divisional matches. Can the Travelers remain undefeated as they face The Lounge Lizards, second place in the Western Division? This match will be this week showdown, as a win can put the Lizards at a tie situation for first place in the GFL. Let's check out the games for the fourth week of action:

Sao Paulo Travelers (3-0) vs. The Lounge Lizards (2-1)
Screaming Meanies (2-1) vs. Da Kine Hawaiian (1-2)
New London Wacker Boyz II (2-1) vs. Sao Paulo Big Passaros (2-1)
Crown City Thorns (2-1) vs. Kauai Rainbows (0-3)
New York Freaky Fat Cats (1-2) vs. Bloody Sabbaths (0-3)

(NFL Bye teams on Week 4: Arizona, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington)

Sao Paulo Travelers (3-0) vs. The Lounge Lizards (2-1)

This week's most interesting game is probably the one between the undefeated Travelers and the powerful Lizards. The Lizards are coming off their first defeat (a 4-point loss to the Hawaiian), and they certainly will like to get back on track with a big win over the GFL's best attack. They'll have to rely on QB Jeff George and specially on the upcoming RB Raymont Harris, who is getting all the Chicago Bears running load, as Rashaan Salaam is out for the season. For the Travelers, they'll welcome back RB Eddie George (byed last week), and they are hoping WR Tim Brown has a better game than last week, when he scored no TD's. Most of all, the Travelers will definitely miss RB Ricky Watters (bye), so their receivers must do better than last week if they want to beat the Lizards. This showdown can put the Lizards on a first-place tie with the Travelers in the Western Division and on GFL.

Carlos Curro, Travelers owner, was very worried when he knew TE Eric Bjornson had a bye, although he hasn't played that well to be such a worry. He'll start unproven Chargers TE Freddie Jones, a rookie. The Lizards coach, Kevin Hilton, cannot count with star WR Irving Fryar (also bye), but this "bench week" might be good for him, as last week he had a chance to bring the Lizards back from behind on Monday Night and blew it.

Screaming Meanies (2-1) vs. Da Kine Hawaiian (1-2)

These match will feature the Da Kine Hawaiian, who last week defeated the Lizards by four points, and the Screaming Meanies, who lost last week to the New York Freaky Fat Cats by only 5 points. That was the Hawaiian first week of the season, and the Meanies first loss. So, what can you expect when these two teams meet? Continuation for the Hawaiian, or will the Meanies try to be more "Meaningful" this week?

The Meanies depend mostly in their RB attack, which features RB's Terrell Davis, Robert Smith and rookie sensation Warrick Dunn. Developed first by the Freaky Fat Cats, the three RB lineup is already in the mouth of coaches, as they'll look to answer questions about its effectiveness. The Hawaiian were very pleased by QB Steve Young's return, as they saw he was the heart of the attack, being the biggest factor in last week's win. They also have a very good kicking game with rookie place kicker Olindo Mare of Miami, and one of the best tight ends in the game on Carolina's Wesley Walls. And with RB Jerome Bettis leading the running attack on Monday Night, this should be a very good matchup.

New London Wacker Boyz II (2-1) vs. Sao Paulo Big Passaros (2-1)

The Big Passaros suffered an embarrassing loss last week to the Crown City Thorns, when their attack failed to keep up with expectations. Coach/owner Luis Curro seemed very worried with some injured players he is keeping in the bench, as WR Tony Martin has been bothered by hamstring problems, and Philadelphia's Chris T. Jones has yet to play a game. They're also waiting for RB Bam Morris return from suspension next week. Until then, the Passaros must get some production other than from QB Drew Bledsoe, who is the heart of the attack, but can't win all games by himself.

The Boyz are coming off their best offensive output of the season, an 82-point effort well over the Rainbows on Week 3. That win gave them a second place tie with the Lizards in the West. They have a very good lineup, with WR's Cris Carter and Michael Jackson leading the way, and a surprising rejuvenated Andre Reed as the go-to guy. QB Vinny Testaverde had somewhat of a slow start, but has been playing well lately. The Boyz were certainly very glad TE Brent Jones played so well last week, showing that the veteran still has some scoring ability - and Steve Young goes to him very often.

Crown City Thorns (2-1) vs. Kauai Rainbows (0-3)

The Thorns slow start is just about to be forgotten, as they won consecutive games and are already in a three-way tie for first place in the East. On the other side, an awful start for the Rainbows: last place in the Eastern Division and they can't catch a break. Surprisingly, both teams have a very similar attack (51 points per game average), so this game will be probably decided by details. The Rainbows will continue with their "Denver Broncos" lineup, as they'll start WR's Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith, along with TE Shannon Sharpe and the Broncos D. Again, they'll go as far as the Broncos go against the Bengals. They feature arguably the best QB in the game today, Brett Favre. They need to get a win, as an 0-4 start can be very difficult to overcome later in the season.

As for the Thorns, their impressive attack relies on the combination of QB Scott Mitchell and WR Johnny Morton, who have been very connected lately. The also feature a dangerous RB attack, as Curtis Martin is almost a sure source of points week after week. They'll have K Mike Hollis on Monday Night. He can decide this game if it turns out to be a close one.

New York Freaky Fat Cats (1-2) vs. Bloody Sabbaths (0-3)

The Cats are trying to get started, as last week they beat the until then undefeated Meanies, and they're hoping to get another one against the struggling Sabbaths, who at 0-3 are in the last place in the West, and they have the worst attack in the league (37 points per game).

The New York team was the first to try the 3-RB lineup, although only last week they got a win out of it. This week, coach Marc Hilton doesn't appear to be so sure of the "Run 'n' Run" (how about this one?), as he'd probably like to start two very good receivers: Carl Pickens and Jake Reed. With Jeff Blake at QB, their combo package Blake-Pickens should be a factor in this match.

The Sabbaths have showed a bleeding in their own attack, as they'll try this week the 3-RB lineup, with Tiki Barber, Napoleon Kaufman and Adrian Murrell. Can the "Run with No-Gun" defeat a team with a normal lineup? (Remember, the 3-RB scheme only defeated another 3-RB lineup this year). They're also hoping the Jaguars D gives them a come from behind possibility on Monday, if needed.

Carlos Curro's Picks: (2-3 last week, 5-5 total)

Sao Paulo Travelers over The Lounge Lizards (65-64)
Da Kine Hawaiian over Screaming Meanies (58-55)
New London Wacker Boyz II over Sao Paulo Big Passaros (70-53)
Crown City Thorns over Kauai Rainbows (51-45)
New York Freaky Fat Cats over Bloody Sabbaths (60-52)
