Shinji Ikari is the main character of Neon Genesis Evangelion. He is the defender of the human race. Shinji wishes to die but cannot bring himself to let himself. He attempts to isolate himself from people in order to keep himself to be hurt and constantly apologizes. Shinji has lead a tramatic life. His mother died in front of him in a failed syncroniztion test. His father turned his back on him, hates him, and betrays him on numerous occasions. He is royally screwed up due to how many unimaginable things occur in his life. He finds out fellow pilot, Rei Ayanami, is a clone made out partially of his mother's DNA. Ikari "runs away" many times as well only to return. Shinji developes a nervous twitch in his hand after his first battle with Satchiel. He gets punched in the face by classmate Touji Suzahara after he revealed being the pilot of Unit-01. Luckily the two became good friends after reconciliating. Shinji is responsible for deciding the fate of mankind after Kaworu asked Shinji to kill him. He then helped complete the third impact in Unit-01. Shinji also has problems with relationships. He appears to be attracted to pilot Asuka Langely but fails to express his feelings to her and she constantly berates him. In the end of the TV series Shinji finally gets better. In the movies, he causes Third Impact and wishes for a world where only he and Asuka live.
