"YO!"
(6/27/03)

I realize that I've been AWOL for almost a month, but it 'twas no fault of my own since the internet place was rampant with viruses that prevented me from reading or sending mail. Now that they finally realized that they needed some software, things should be better, tho we'll see. Anyway, I don't know what number I'm on anymore, so we'll just go with this Onward with the latest...

1. In an attempt to further acculturate, I've stopped wearing deoderant. It's taken me almost 7 months so I don't feel too bad about it, but I decided, why bother? I sweat even when I'm sitting still and I might as well smell like everyone else here. Besides, when in the States will I ever be able to do that and still maintain friends? The choice seemed clear and I'm kind of liking the whole situation---I'm becoming the hippie that even my 4 years of college in Boulder couldn't uncover.

2. True to form, we spent last Sunday at our family's house, the Toviezans. They cooked a tasty lunch of chicken, local leaves, and a smoky darker meat. When we asked what is was, they said is was like a porcupine but without quills. Yup, first official taste of bushrat, folks. I know you're jealous. We also learned how to make our fave frozen treat, lait caille, which is basically a mixture of full-cream milk powder, yogurt, water, and cous cous. We were elbow deep in warm milk mixing the gweegy stuff with our hands and loving every minute. Plus, one of our other moms even wants to teach us the right way to eat with our hands--I figure I should take advantage of the opportunity while I'm still in a location that encourages such behavior.

3. My/our girl group will be kicking off on Tuesday, so I'm looking forward to that with a mixture of trepidation and excitement. We've been ad-campaigning all week, and I think it will pay off. We'll see. We'll either be eaten alive or actually respected for once---cross your fingers.

4. The dogs are fabulous--we're going to get their ovaries yanked in a few weeks to prevent puppies, tho no one in town understands why. They think we're hideously mean for taking away their sex-life. Right. However, Bousco has a fungus that's been leaving huge patches of her skin furless. We took her to the vet and he wrote a perscription right away, since apparently WE can catch this skin fungus as well. Fabulous.

Other than that, not much to report. I'm sorry this is so lackluster, but it's been a pretty tame last few weeks and the internet has already booted me off twice mid-email, so I want to send this before it happens again.

Oh, and before I forget, someone stole Leigh's phone while we were in Franceville a few weeks ago, so she's using mine on Wednesdays and Sundays, so if you want to call, please do it any other day of the week.

Love to all-
Leah
