INFORMATION COMMUNICATION

Can you label the picture of the computer shown below?

Use the list of words to help you. Monitor, Mouse mat, Computer, Keyboard, Mouse

Now it's time to use the computer

1. The computer is asking you to enter your user name and your password.

Your user name is a unique code that starts with your year of entry followed by your surname.

E.g. A year 7 student may have the user name: 01BARNETT.

2. Type in your user name using the keyboard, the numbers and letters should appear on the monitor screen.

3. Now click in the box below that is labelled Password: and type in your password (at the moment your password is password).

4. At the moment all the students in your class have the same password and they could get into your computer files and take a look at what you have written! You need to think of a password that only you know to make sure that all your files are private.

What could your new password be?

It's important that :

  • you don't write it down

  • you use a password that you're not going to forget

  • you use a password that your friends can't guess

  • you use a one word password that is more than 3 letters and less than 8 letters long.

Remember: if you forget your password you will not be able to use a computer!

5. Click on Network in the bottom right corner, then on Change Password type in password as your current password. Then type in your new password.

(the password will not appear on the screen!)

6. Retype your password and then click OK

A message should appear: The password has been successfully changed

Now answer the questions...

Q1. Why do you need to have a password?

Q2. Why do you think it is not a good idea to write your password down?
