|
3 Lessons |
Microsoft Word |
TEACHING OBJECTIVES |
What do I want the pupils to understand:
That a network consists of a group of computers connected to a
file server that allows access from any PC to centrally stored data.
That passwords are needed to prevent unauthorised access to the
network.
That a graphical user interface makes it easier to use a
computer, particularly for new users.
|
What do I want the pupils to be able to do:
Log on to the network
Load a program
Exit a program
Create a folder
Save a file
Access a file that has been saved
Close a window
Maximise a window
Minimise a window
Access shared data
Spell check
Proof read
Highlight text
Change the size of the text
Change the font
Use bold, italics and underlining
Centre text
Cut and paste text
Use undo to correct mistakes
Save a document
Return to a document that has been saved
Print a document
Use the zoom control
Insert a picture
Resize a picture
Move a picture
Use a keyboard effectively

TEACHING METHODOLOGIES |
Class discussion
Practical use of computers. |
HOW IS THE UNIT TO BE ASSESSED? |
A mark out of 10 |
RESOURCES |
Help Sheet and Introduction sheet, baseline test, computers |
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE NEEDED AT BEGINNING OF UNIT |
Ability to use a mouse and keyboard. To be able to recognise a
computer, keyboard, mouse and monitor.
|
LESSON |
|
1 |
Give out baseline test.
Recap introductory lesson (User name, passwords, sensible use of
computers etc and why?)
Get students to log in.
Discuss the network, saving in user areas, lunchtime availability
and the software available and what it can be used for.
Give out Introductory Sheet (includes opening & closing
programs, minimising, maximising and restoring windows. Moving &
changing the size of windows, multitasking, creating folders or
directories, saving a file and re-opening a file).
Homework: 7CIHWK1 |
2 |
Recap key words learnt from lesson 1.
Continue with a short discussion about the use of word processing
programs, including Microsoft Word. Some of the students may be
familiar with this program others will be using it for the first
time. Show them examples of work that has been word-processed and
compare it with work that hasn’t been word-processed.
The most important skill that all students need to begin with, is
an ability to highlight text. It may be worth going through this
with the whole class before the student’s log onto the network.
Explain the task outline and demonstrate how to copy Start into
their user area. Students will need the Help sheet – CI7HEL. Make
it clear that this is their ‘teacher’, they should only put
their hand up if they cannot find the answer to their problem from
the worksheet. This should make it easier to concentrate your
support on those students who are really struggling.
Once students have started using the worksheet they should be
able to work fairly independently.
Make sure that they are clear that you have to check their work
before they print.
Homework:
- Make a list of 3 different word processors.
- Why do businesses use word processors?
|
3 |
Discuss the different parts of a computer system (VDU, CPU,
printers, networks etc)
Students continue to improve the document Start. You may need to
explain how a spell checker works (they probably think it’s some
form of magic!). Also explain the difference between spell checking
and proof reading.
Make sure you check their work before you allow students to
print.
Homework: Complete Start and print for next lesson |
