I hate being lied to. Especially when it is a professional person, you know like someone who owns a business. I am going to tell you a story that has been griping my ass for about a year. I really need to get it off of my chest If you don't want to be bored with rambling, click another link. |

A couple years ago I was in one of my favorite shops, killing time, when the owner started talking about building a web page. I listened intently because that is one of my areas of expertise. We exchanged ideas and moved on to different topics like the kind of powder to use in a 40 S&W. I came back a few days later and she gave me a web address to check out. When I left, I went straight home and surfed to the address she gave me. I was very disappointed. There was nothing, no glitz, no glamour and damn little information. I sat down and put together a rough layout of a decent home page. It only took me about 2 days. Looking for graphics, cleaning them up and all that good stuff. |
||
I printed the layouts and took them in, she seemed to like what she saw. After a few revisions, she asked me if I could upload these pages to her web page. I said sure and went home and did it. After a short time she asked me if I had any ideas on how we could get more hits. I explained that we needed a domain that was easy for people to remember. We talked about how that could happen and the next thing I know she is asking me if I can move the page to the new domain on Shooters.com. Now moving a page is not that big of a deal, adding 6 or 7 other pages can get alittle dicey. But I did it and made some other changes. When this started, I designed a logo for the page. With the move I designed a NEW logo. I added sound to the pages and cleaned up some links that had changed. All through this, I was doing this work for a friend that needed help. I had never asked for anything. Finally on September 25, 2000 the page was up and running. Almost immediately I started getting calls asking, no telling me of changes that needed to be made. Design changes at first. Move this here move that there, that type of thing. Then the calls that really griped me. The price is wrong here. The amount is wrong there. I made a comment about G.I.G.O. (Garbage In Garbage Out) but it didn't seem to register. I just made the changes and let it go. |

I made changes and additions almost daily. But that was cool, it gave me something to do, and the site was getting hits. I kept digging for graphics and elements to improve the site. One day in October, I walked into the store and was told that the owner and her husband wanted to take my wife and I to the Shot Show in New Orleans I was surprised by the gesture. I thanked them and said we would be happy to go, just let me know particulars and we are good. A couple days later I came in and they had just received a shipment of Winchester merchandise. The owner gave me a mouse pad, a coffee cup, 3 duffle bags and a Winchester ammo box. I thanked them and took these goodies home. I continued to get calls and emails about additions and corrections, I kept making the additions and corrections. Then I was in another shop in town and they were talking about going to the Shot Show tomorrow. I listened and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I guess the owner and her husband had changed their minds. No big deal, just let me know. I went to the shop and they didn't say a word about the Shot Show. Cool. They really changed their minds. Unfortunately, they NEVER said a word to me. Things went on for over a year and nothing was said until one day the owner came up to me in the store and said that when the new store is opened this fall, we are going to pay you $500 for your work on the web page. I suggested that they give me a Dillon XL650 instead and she agreed. That was cool, we didn't get to go to New Orleans, but I was going to get a new reloading press. That's great. In the meantime she had made the comment that she wanted to take a more productive role in the web page. Not a problem, I loaded up everything that had anything to do with her web page and burnt a CD and gave it to her. I told her that if she wanted any help, all she needed to do was call. About two months later, I picked up some polishing media and on the way home I got a ticket for not having my seatbelt on. I made a comment at the store a couple days later that I had gotten a ticket and the owner blew up. She accused me of blaming the ticket on the store. She seemed to have turned into the Bitch from hell. I wrote her a letter and told her that I had never done anything to hurt her store. Since she seemed to think that I had, I would not bother to show myself in her establishment again. |

The funny thing is, there has not been
ANY changes, updates, additions or deletions since my last page edit.
After trying to visit the site recently(8/15/2002), it seems to have been shut down. What a shame. |
