I am the proud owner of a Ruger Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger, and an Encore with a .454 Casull barrel.
When shooting at the range the other day, I was asked my opinion on the two calibers. I gave my opinion and then offered to bring the weapons to the range for this interested shooter to try.

As you may or may not have noticed, I am an opinionated individual. The only problem is my opion can be changed. I am not a little person, and I took it as a challenge when I was told that it took a man to shoot the 454. Well, let me set the record straight. The 454 is not for the faint of heart or limp wristed. It truly is one magnificent weapon. For most people that enjoy shooting just to relax, the 454 is NOT for you. I would feel comfortable hunting any game with it, but....

if I were given my druthers, I would carry the .480 Ruger instead. The weapon packs enough power to stop a steaming locomotive. It can knock any idiot out of the air trying to leap tall buildings in a single bound. No it is not a bird, nor a plane, it's the Ruger .480.
The Super Redhawk frame is a great launching pad for this weapon. I only hope some day, IMI adds the 480 to the Desert Eagle collection.

Before any of you .475 Linebaugh guys get upset, I did not compare the two weapons on purpose. I do not own a 475 and I will not say unless I know. I do know that my reloading dies are 480 Ruger/475 Linebaugh. That is all I KNOW about the 475.
Good Day, and Great Shooting

In December of 2001 I picked up a Super Redhawk in 454. My opinion has changed slightly. Using the Ruger instead of the Encore, I truly compared apples to apples.

The 454 still maintains a SHARPER recoil, but it doesn't stomp you for firing it, the way the Encore does.

I still prefer the 480 to the 454 but I would not hesitate to take it with me on a hunting trip. Both of these guns will hit what you aim at, at about 100 yards. God I love these weapons and this country.
