DAY 7: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24th
Up at 5:20, to find the promise of another glorious day, but the promise was not quite fulfilled, as later events proved. This camp is a "cinch"
if there ever was such a thing,- driftwood galore, and about three minutes sufficed to get a roaring fire,- quite a contrast to yesterday morning and other similar occasions. Breakfast at six o'clock,-
oatmeal, porridge, coffee, graham crackers, and pancakes. Again were the latter unequaled. I read the New York Sunday papers after breakfast while Fred tried his luck fishing. Nothing doing in either.
Reluctanty broke camp at 9:20 and pulled up to Long Lake Village. Inquired for letters, but found none. Also for Hamner of our Law School class, but found he lived a mile back from the lake,-
he is the fellow we used to call the "Hamilton County Bar Association" because he was, and perhaps is, I believe, the only present or prospective lawyer in Hamilton County.
Got some Zu-Zu gingersnaps (5) which we had for lunch. Also flour (2 lb.) sugar (2 lb.) and a bottle of maple syrup (30). I bought a looking glass, and we got our first glimpse of "oorsils as ithers sae us" for almost a week.
Ye gods, what a scruff I am wearing on my face! Intend to shave before arriving at Saranac,- if the blame glass doesn't get smashed in packing before that time.
