DAY 9: FRIDAY, AUGUST 26th

Were awakened at an early hour this morning with the pattering of feet on the piazza. Fred saw the patterer. Says it was a woodchuck. Whatever it was, he followed it around the house with the "gun" and could have shot it by a pile of horse blankets and collars where it disappeared, but that he thought the pile contained our duffle, and so did not shoot. Got to sleep again,- but my, those boards were hard,- reminded us of the time we slept on the benches 'neath the Thompson's Lake church shed.

Up at 7:30 and got away without any breakfast, just to fool the blooming wind. A cold north wind, blowing up the lake, and against us, chilled us to the bone, but travelling was comparatively easy. Found the inlet to the Raquette with some difficulty, and at nine got into the current. It was the greatest cinch yet, although we had some trouble in worming our way through a small log jam. Pulled ashore for breakfast at 9:30,- oatmeal, pancakes, coffee.

Where silvery Raquette
winds it's tranquil way

"Above the falls. A log-jam."
