DAY 1: THURSDAY, AUGUST 18th (Continued)

Obtained our canoe from Mark's, but a step south of the Old Forge depot. Picked out a sixteen-footer, of about seventy pounds weight. Price $10.00 for two weeks. Could have gotten one for eight, but it was not so substantial looking, and economy in canoes is the worst kind of extravagance on a trip of this kind. Fifteen minutes later we were on the water, and our long trip had actually begun in earnest. The weather cleared off nicely, and the sun shone brightly, though it still continued cold.

Old Forge Inlet is very pretty, though nothing out of the ordinary. Fifteen minutes of this brought us into the First Lake of the Fulton Chain, a picturesque sheet of water, on the east shore of which we landed for lunch,- two ham sandwiches of the railroad variety, and a couple of bananas. We laid off and snoozed until nearly three o'clock, and started for Second Lake, getting into the wrong inlet and fetching up in a forest of "bean poles".
