DAY 6: TUESDAY, AUGUST 23rd (Continued)
On the suggestion of the postmaster, we located a livery-man, and found he would drive us over, bag and baggage, to Long Lake, eight miles, for the enormous sum of three dollars!
Thus we would save at least twenty eight miles of paddling, or two days of fair weather, to say nothing of catching up with our schedule. We closed with him at once, and at eleven thirty, with the canoe tailing out of the back of
a three-seated democrat wagon from which the seats had been removed, the driver astride of the bow and we on one
of the seats amidships, with our duffle in the canoe, we set out in state.
