DAY 9: FRIDAY, AUGUST 26th (Continued)
The stillness here is unearthly, broken now and then by a weird call of some kind from way up on the mountain-side, that goes something like this, "Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, woo-woo, woo-hoo." with the accent on
the "hoo". Neither a dog nor an owl. The guides we saw say it was themselves, calling one to the other, but we do not believe that.
Very cold
tonight. Shall sleep in our sweaters. I made a balsam bed, and we ought to be quite comfy. The guides say we can see some deer early in the morning by crossing the river and going through some "meadows". Bed 10 o'clock.
