I knew most of the names in my line from other sources. I LOVED the stuff about Cousins. I was throughly confused at first. I kept running into the same names. My Great Grandparents were 1st cousins and her Parents were first cousins. Apparantly the Sassers, Moores, Newtons, and Willis's all married their 1st Cousins for hundreds of years! I am a folklorist in Philadelphia, researching African American religious song traditions in the South. I have recorded a hymn sung in several churches in the 1990's that begins "I saw him low kneeling down on the cold ground, He was the most helpless poor creature that ever was found..." I have previously been unable to find any information about the origins of this hymn. I am delighted to findon your web site an indication that this text has a long history. I am wondering if the text that you discovered in Bill Humfleet's old trunk was ever published and where? And how has the family story of the origin of this hymn been preserved? Has it been past on through word of mouth, through the generations? Is there any other information that you know of about the author, Calvin Hatfield? thank you for your information Jon David

I have been researching my family name for some years now and through this research have found my name to be one of many derivatives of the the name
"de la Saussaye". I believe the name originates in Normandy around 1100

the different dirivitive names I have seen are: Saucier, Sauce, Sousse,
Sausser. Maybe a Connection.

I have read with interest your compilation and there are a few items that you
have that I would like to add to my data, specifically on descendants of
Jonathan and Melvina Humfleet. Also, I wish you to know that Bert Felix
Humfleet died in Madison Co., KY, not Laurel Co. and is buried in the Berea
Cemetery. Gertrude Humfleet born 1888 who married James Forest Dozier was a full sister to Bert Felix, who was the youngest of Jonathan and Melvina's children. There was no third marriage for Jonathan to a Lucinda. If so, then certainly, Gertrude was not a daughter. Melvina lived beyond the death of Jonathan and was never divorced from him. Felix and America Scott Humfleet were the grandparents of my three eldest children.

Thanks for a great site on the Helton family. I am researching the family of
Benjamin Franklin Jackson who married Esther "Hetty" Helton. She is shown in
census records as Ester/Esther/Hettie and signs Civil War pension papers as
Esther. Benjamin Franklin Jackson died in 1862 in Jackson County, KY, and
then she married George McQueen abt 1867 in KY and they are found in the
1870 Census in Jackson County, KY. I also find Esther and her second husband, George McQueen in the 1880 US Census in Roland Twp, Pulaski County, AR, with TWO
sons: Clary, b. abt 1869 in KY, and George, b. abt 1872 in KY. Later find a
marriage for their son, George McQueen to Laura Bond, a relative of other Jackson family members. Have not been able to find any further information on George and Esther or Clary McQueen. Let me know if you have any questions.
