One Shot Wonders

Have you ever watched a movie or an OAV, noticed some super cool guy lurking in the background, then never saw him again? This site is dedicated to those guys with less than ideal exposure. They die too soon, they are superceded by the main characters, they are forgotten in their supporting roles, or they were simply evolved too quickly, so that the particular moment of being a Leading Man passes into history.

If you came in through the Laputa: Castle's in the Webring below, please take the time to see the rest of the Leading Men of Anime.

Not Quite Standard Disclaimer:
The images here were gleaned from many different sites--wherever I happened to see a good picture of the Leading Man in question...In some cases I had to chop him out of a bigger picture, brighten the image itself--anything to get HIS solo mug up there. If I'm using your image and you don't like what I've done to it, tell me about it and I'll take it out. Remember: all images here belong solely to their creators.

All guys are plugged in ALPHABETICALLY per page, and in the order I received the suggestions, to avoid the reams of hate-mail I can imagine for inadvertently maligning *your* Leading Man.

The Baker (inset) with his bread wreathe hanging in the shop window...
the Baker
from the movie Kiki's Delivery Service

You may well wonder--who on earth is this? It will take a bit of hard work to recall him. Remember when Kiki first moved into the city--she ended up with a friendly baker woman, Osono (Anne in the English dub) Well, the guy we have up here is her husband. He was a real sweetie!

After Kiki's first day on the job, he baked her a bread-sign, of a witch flying. He's so cute--he waited for her to see it, just to gauge her reaction, and tried to pretend it wasn't him. There's thoughtful for you! Lillith found the Kiki Shrine that had the inset picture of Osono's husband.

This is the only image I could find with Dora's boys in it--not all of them are there...
Dora's Boys
from the movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky

In the beginning of Laputa, we see Sheeta running from a bunch of pirates. Their leader was Dora... Anyway, the Boys are her sons and innumerable crewmen that affectionately call her "Mama." They are absolutely adorable.

When they chased the kids into town, they ran into trouble with the local folks--the "muscling up" contest was one of the most memorable, I'd say! And the way they all went after Sheeta in the kitchen was fantastically hilarious--and touching! They've tons of priceless little moments tied up in the movie--I could spend all day reminiscing.

Furusawa -- donated by Rockear
Furusawa
from the OAV Here is Greenwood

This is an extremely background character. In the 3 volumes of the OAV, this "motorcycle" guy showed up only twice: in the beginning, when Kazuya was explaining exactly how wierd the dorm Greenwood was, and this guy walked down the stairs carrying--of all things--a racing motorcycle on his shoulder.

The second time he showed up was during the making of the dorm's "Koko wa Devilwood" entry to the school festival. He played the part of the ferryman for 'Lemon Herb' and 'Tino.' That was really cute.

Rockear told me:
I noticed you don't have a picture of Furusawa-sempai for the One-Shot Wonders page. As the owner of a healthy chunk of the Koko wa Greenwood manga, I can run off a few scans of him for you, if you so desire.
I did, so she did, and here it is!

Noboyuki--donated by Lillith
Noboyuki
from the movie Tenchi Muyo! In Love

Tenchi's dad is a (I think Ryoko put it best) dirty old man, but in his high school years he was really cute and kinda torpe (uhmm, I don't know how to translate that from the Filipino, but it means that he's a bit shy around girls and doesn't really know how to proceed). Very sweet too.

Naturally, he's a One Shot Wonder, because I most certainly do not think he's a Leading Man in the present tense. Lillith found this image for me. Thanks a lot!

Special Operative A
Special Operarative A
from the movie Tenchi Muyo! In Love

Seion says:
This is a guy who went toe-to-toe with Ryoko and not only came out alive, he made the space pirate look bad (sorry Ryoko fans, he did outrun her on foot while she was flying and you know how fast that is!) It's a shame he got slaughtered by Kain at Tokyo Tower. He would have been a great addition to the cast.

Indeed--a cool guy, though a bit wierd. Too bad Kain took care of him...
